CaMoFLauGe`s "On YouR OwN"...

HiPHoPCaNaDa.CoM & Camoflauge a.k.a. Gangis Khan hook`D up for this bangin` street album "On Your Own". Camo` repS Toronto`s Scarborough region, but he`s actually Indian. Born in Kuwait, he & his brothers were sent to Scarborough because their folks wanted them to have better opportunties. Camo` possesses a powerful voice, has DoPe quoteables & when he wants to he can connect with the listeners when he dropS heart~felt lyrics. If you`d like to find out a lil` more about Camoflauge he did a nice interview with HiPHoPCaNaDa.CoM back in May, you can read it here. As for this street album, there`s a good mix of club~friendly Radio~type tuneS, some `Hood jointS & then there`s the deep/ emotional trackS to balance things out so enjoy...

BoSS BiTCH`s "PSyCHo"...

I had to ask one of my homieS about this female rapper because honestly I had never heard of her until said~homie put me on to a track called "Cock It Man". It`s an obvious gun~play track, but I found that the hook kept me singin` it....LoL, anyway Boss Bitch has a unique rap style -- at times she can get wil` & crazy like Mystikal on the mic. BLaCKKoLDMaDiNa`s "TRouBLeD The WaTeR"...

Kimberly Rivers a.k.a. BlackKoldMadina is the C.E.O. of Born Hustler Records, a New Orleans based indy label. She started up the label back in June of 2006 because at the time she was an inspiring rapper without an outlet. She wanted to be able to create & promote her own music without anyone (label execs., A&R`s etc.) tellin` to her to sound like so & so just to sell some records -- well that & then Hurricane Katrina truly brought out the BlackKoldMadina in Kimberly...

Her "gangster street style of music" is inspired by the streets of New Orleans & the world that surrounds her. Give it a listen if you`re curious & enjoy...

MeNaJaHTwa`S "CHa-LiCiouS"...

This female HiP HoP group from Compton, California may have only been a duo, but they went by the name Menajahtwa -- yes you pronounce it just as it`s spelled out....LoL, maybe it`s because that`s what it became when Spice & Royal T teamed up on the mic over a beat. Or maybe it was just used to attract attention, who really knows? What I do know is that these two emceeS made their debut back in 1992 on the late Eazy-E`s "5150: Home 4 Tha Sick" EP on the track "Merry Mutha Phukkin` X-Mas" alongside the A.T.B.A.N. Klann (y`all should remember them:) who were also making their debut at the time...

About 2 yearS later they dropped their only album titled "Cha-Licious" on Ruthless Records in 1994. Featuring some nice G-FuNK~type production from DJ U-Neek, DJ Yella, D-Dawg & Rhythm D. Eazy-E, Gangsta Dresta, B.G. Knocc, Leicy Loc & The Fyrm all make guest appearances on the album. I don`t know anything about the last 2 guests, so if anyone can SCHooL me by all meanS do it up....LoL, anyways "Cha-Licious" had 2 singles; "La La La" & "Giv Tha Azz 2 No 1", a powerful anti~rape record. The album failed commercially & it`s 2 singles didn`t even hit up the Billboard Charts...

Despite the failure of "Cha-Licious" Menajahtwa remained together for a few more years. Making an appearance Eazy-E`s 1996 album "Str8 Off Tha Streetz Of Mutha Phukkin` Compton" on the track titled "Gangsta Beat 4 Tha Street" alongside B.G. Knocc Out & Gangsta Dresta. They followed up that appearance with another in 1997 on Adina Howard`s "Swerve On" from the "(Freak) And You Know It" Maxi~Single (you can get that single here, BiG~Up EaR CaNDy ReMiX!). A lil` while after that `97 appearance the group broke up & now they`re featured on XXL (the HiP HoP Mag`) Milk Cartons...

BeNNy BLaCC`s "STReeT RaPPeR"...

Benny Blacc`s one half of Toronto HiP HoP group Tha Smugglaz, his rhyme partner Stick-Up Kid is the remaining half -- together they form one of the more hard~edged & ReSPeCT`d groupS repp`N the Jane & Finch area. Their 'Reality Raps' even caught the attention of CBC`s "The National" when Tha Smugglaz were featured in a documentary titled "Street Rappers"...

This joint here isn`t that documentary, but it`s just as iLL. What you`ve got here is Benny Blacc flex`N his flowS on the solo tip over some solid beatS, they really mesh well with his vibe on the mic. Stand out trackS (my opinion of course:) "Dreams", "Prince", "Mister Man", "Hip Hop" & both the bonus tracks. Do ya`self a favor & give this joint a listen if you`re a fan of that real hard~rock street ish...

Here`s a lil` extra bonus...

A.T.B.A.N. KLaNN`s "GRaSS RooTs"...

The A.T.B.A.N. Klann, a.k.a. A Tribe Beyond A Nation....a HiP HoP group consisting of Mookie Mook, DJ Motiv8, Will 1X, Dante Santiago & Apl.de.ap. Will 1X & Apl.de.ap used to break together as a crew (Tribal Nation), later on they linked up with Mookie Mook, Dante Santiago & DJ Motiv8 to form the group the A.T.B.A.N. Klann. Eazy-E seen the potential that they embodied & scooped these katZ up around 1992, signing them to Ruthless Records. Shortly after being signed they made their debut on Eazy-E`s "5150: Home 4 Tha Sick" EP on the track "Merry Mutha Phuckin` X-Mas".

Soon after that they began to work on their debut album "Grass Roots" which was set up for an October release in 1992. They had an equal balance of trackS created with computer programing & some jointS recorded using a live band. The album was completed, but due to label politrickS & then Eazy-E`s death the album never seen the light of day, it was shelved for whatever reason. They did release a 12" for "Puddles Of H2O" around `94 but it was a 'Promo Only' release.

After leaving Ruthless Records Will 1X & Apl.de.ap hooked up with Taboo & they became the Black Eyed Peas. Shortly after signing to Interscope Will 1X changed his name to Will.I.Am. So there y`all go, a lil` pre~Black Eyed Peas history for ya....LoL, enjoy the album...

BuDD@H BLe$$eD EnT. PReSeNTs: "Da LaDieZ iN Tha HouSe VoL. 1"...

Last weekend I was a lil` on the bored side so I decided to put together a lil` mix to RePReSeNT for the LaDieZ of HiP HoP. I wanted to showcase the talent that these women possess, especially since at least 90% of the women on this mix can rock the mic just as good if not better than most of their male counterparts, but they never truly get their PRoPs. Hopefully this joint does `em some justice! It was a bit on the hard side to cut the tracklist down to fit on a CD, so you can expect to see future volumes. Feel free to leave some feedback, even a list of some artists or tracks for future jointS...

GHeTTo CoNCePT`s SeLF TiTLeD ALBuM...

It was `96 when I first heard some ish from Toronto`s Ghetto Concept, the crew reppin` their Rexdale neighborhood roots. The track was the Juno Award winning "E-Z On Tha Motion". In fact to this day it`s still my favorite track of their`s, I just love the smooth`D out Jazzy vibe...

For those that aren`t up on G.C. I`ll school ya....LoL, or at least I`ll give it a try. Ghetto Concept as a group originally consisted of 3 members; Kwajo Cinqo, Dolo & Infinite. They formed the group sometime around 1989, competing in local Rap contests at community centers & cipherin` at block partieS. Then 1992 they hooked up with entrepeneur Julien Arthur & released their first single "Certified" on the indy label Groove-a-Lot Records. In 1994 things started to spark off for G.C., they won a Juno Award (it`s like the Grammy`s Canadian cousin) for "Certified" & earned another the following year for "E-Z On Tha Motion". Just when things were really starting to PoP off however, Infinite`s brother was murdered in `95 & he left the group a lil` while after. Before his exit from Ghetto Concept though the crew recorded "Much Love", a tribute to Infinite`s brother. It was later released as a single with a music video as well...

Infinite ended up going for dolo, releasing an EP titled "360 Degrees" in 1998 (Read all about homie & the EP right here.) while the remaining duo released their self titled debut album thru 7 Bill$ Entertaiment. A label/ company that they had formed together in 1996. The "7 Bill$" moniker represents the fact that G.C.`s tryin` to stack chipS in the 7~figure range to help get their families & communities out of the struggle...

“This isn’t just for us”, says lyricist Kwajo, “we started 7 Bill$ Entertainment for Angel Duss, Blacks, Ray Smoove. We have mad people comin` up with us...”

Mad people is true, and some of them are featured all on the self titled Ghetto Concept album. Stand out jointS for me are "Precious Metals", "7 Days", "Krazy World" & "Blades Of Ice". So give it a listen for ya`self & experience Ghetto Concept at their hungriest ...

CRU`s "Da DiRTy 30"...

OVeRLooK`D CLaSSiC are the 2 wordS that come to my mind when anyone SPeaKS on CRU`s "Da Dirty 30" album. They originally went by the name Rhythm Blunt Cru (I`m actually looking for the "Rhythm Blunt Cru" [12 inch] if anyone could link that up I`d greatly appreciate it!) but apparently Mr. Russel Simmons wasn`t really feeling that so they cut it down to CRU. Repp`N the Bronx, CRU consisted of 3 members rapper Chadeeo, producer/ rapper Yogi & hype~man The Mighty Ha. They dropp`D "Da Dirty 30" in 1997, the album`s title referenced the district where these KaTs were from -- that & the fact that it had 30 trackS on it. Yogi handled the entire album`s production, dropp`N some good ol` New York BooM BaP beatS for that ass! While Tracey Lee ("it`s Party Time..."), a MaD HuNGRy sound`N Black Rob, The Lox, always iLL Ras Kass, storytellin` Slick Rick & even "The Gangstress" herself, Antoinette all show up for some DoPe featureS...

Even though this trio laced the HiP HoP WoRLD with some DoPe music their album sales weren`t all that great, so I`m guessin` that they were dropp`D from the label. However they had a track appearance ("Ohh Wee") on "Violator: The Album" a Violator Records compilation that was released in 1999. After that there`s been nothing but silence from the CRU. Yogi`s still doin` a lil` production though, he did a couple jointS for Method Man`s "Tical 0: The Prequel". O`TaY, that`s enough YiP~YaPP`n y`all just need to check the album out for bangerS like "Just Another Case", "Pronto", "Bubblin`", "Ebonic Plague", "Goines Tale", "Lisa Lipps" & "Armaggedon" to name a few...

"The DoGs"...

Now I`ve got to keep it 100 & say that I`m not that BiG on BaSS MuSiC, but lately I`ve been trying to listen to some different ish since the music that`s labeled so~called HiP HoP now~a~dayS just doesn`t really seem to hold my interest much any more. Came up on this joint during my searches & found it a lil` interesting, especially since it`s 18 years old & I hadn`t heard it. Actually, I had never even heard of The Dogs before so I spoke with some of my friendS & got a lil` info`. The homieS that I talk`D with told me that The Dogs were basically a 2 Live Crew shadow with their BaSS~HeaVy X~RaTeD RaPs & honestly I`d have to agree because there isn`t much to separate the two groupS. The Dogs were co-founded by Ricky Taylor a.k.a. Disco Rick (of Gucci Crew fame) on Joey Boy Records & the self~titled album`s hitS included "Take It Off", a stripper`s anthem track that became a local hit back in `89 & "Crack Rock", addressin` well Crack use....a joint that`s still relevant today, 18 yearS later...

Wu-TaNG CLaN`s "MySTaGoGue VoL. II"...

Gotta thank Liftid for the links on this joint, some real early Wu-Tang ish from `96-97. It was released & packaged as a FREE cassette (my PRe~DiGi homieS can remember them jointS :) with the skateboardin` mag` Slap. There was a lil` catch though, you had to cop the mag` from a skateboard shop because the cassette wasn`t packaged with the regular ol` bookshop/ newstand copieS. Anyway, the cassette itself is a gem for y`all true Wu-Tang fanS -- pure RZA on the gritty & grimey side, Jazz & FUnk mixed with some "36 Chambers" & "Tical"...
