"Da GaMe Of LiFe" [MoVie]...

Da Game Of Life
Run Time: 35 mins (not including bonus videos)
Company: No Limit Films

This movie, or short film was put together while Snoop was signed to No Limit Records, originally dropped in the VHS format in 1998 & was later re-released in 2004 as a DVD. Now the movie itself doesn`t feature the best acting skillS, but the storyline is alright - I`d give it a 2 out of 5. It features C-Murder as "Money" & Snoop Dogg playing the role of "Smooth" in a sort hood remake of "Casino". This joint also includes a couple of 'never seen before' videos that have been banned from TV, guess due to the X-rated content...LoL

iNFiNiTe`s "360 DeGReeS EP"...

`97's "Gotta Get Mine" was the first time I heard anything from Infinite, actually I seen the video on Much Music`s "Rap City". The track was later selected as the first single for the Beatfactory/EMI released "RapEssentials: Volume 2" compilation, guess I wasn`t the only kat feelin` the track. Divine "Earth Essence" Brown is featured on the hook while Inf` kickS the lyricS that many can relate to over a smooth`D out beat, definitely BaNG`n! For those that don`t know about homie let me do a lil` BaCK~STePP`n & give ya some info` on this DoPe Canadian emcee...

Growing up with his two brothers & single mother in Rexdale, a low income housing area in Toronto, he was continuously exposed to that 'STReeT LiFe' & all it`s negativity. I guess to escape some of it he became a member of Toronto`s HiP HoP group Ghetto Concept, Juno Award winners in `95 & `96. The escapism was short lived however when one of his brothers was murdered in 1995. He left Ghetto Concept shortly after & started up his own label Lockdown Entertainment Inc. with his remaining brother Cain. Infinite`s "360 Degrees [EP]" was the label`s first release, maybe the only one I`m still lookin` for the info`. Regardless Lockdown did it BiG with this project & they definitely upp`D the ante on the music video tip, releasing a video for each track. They all received some decent rotation on Much Music & even won a few awards ("Best Hip Hop Video" from the Canadian Urban Music Awards for "Gotta Get Mine", Much Music`s Best Hip Hop Video 1997, Canadian Urban Music Awards Best Hip Hop Video, Mic Check Magazines Best Rap Video 1997, "Take A Look" was nominated for the Canadian Urban Music Award for Best Music Video.)...

"360 Degrees" was the first single off the EP, a crime~epic dropped thru Infinite`s iLL storytelling abilities, definitely one of his strong PoiNTs! "Take A Look" gained some extra light, much like "Gotta Get Mine", when it was chosen as the first single for the BMG distributed album "RapEssentials: The Rebirth", helping the compilation sell more than 5, 000 copies in its first week. "Take A Look" is another track that has Inf` flexin` his art of storytelling & they put together a DoPe fully animated video that definitely captured the emcee`s street narratives & did his LyRiCS justice. Guess that`s why the video received heavy rotation on Much Music back in 1999; charting on Rap City`s "Top 5" for 6 weeks during June & July, holding down the number one spot for three consecutive weeks...

"Wise Guys" has an iLL grimy soundin` beat to support Inf`s crime taleS...

"One Day" has a relaxed vibe to it...

The EP itself sold more than 5, 000 copies in less than 12 months without the help of a major distribution company. Now that you`ve seen all the music videos, here`s the EP to bump in ya` speakerS! This joint`s actually pretty rare, even here in Canada so consider ya`selves BLeSS`D.....LoL, & if you have an original retail copy you have a definite gem `cuz it`s going for $150 on amazon...

ERyKaH BaDu`s "HoNeY" MuSiC ViDeO...

Earlier this year (a few weekS ago, if ya want to get technical) I shared with y`all "Honey" the first single featuring Little Brother from Erykah Badu`s upcoming album "New Amerykah". Well now I`ve got the music video for ya to peep & I must say that this is one of the DoPeST videoS I`ve seen in a very long while, originality no doubt. How many album coverS do ya recognize? I seen Minnie Ripperton`s "Loving You", Diana Ross` "Boss", Eric B. & Rakim`s "Paid In Full", De La Soul`s "3 Feet High & Rising", Funkadelic`s "Maggot Brain", Nas` "Illmatic" & Grace Jones` "Slave To The Rhythm". I know there were more but that`s all I got......LoL, anyway peep the video...

K-DoT`s "MoNSTeR"...

Toronto emcee K-Dot & the Arkeologists connect to drop "Monster" a great LP...& honestly it`s been a minute since I`ve BuMP`d some good ol` HiP HoP music, so first off I gotta say thanks FeLLaS :)..."Monster" has all that true HiP HoP headZ can enjoy; rugged & dusty underground beatS that BaNG hard courtesy of the Arkeologists & then there`s K-Dot`s hardcore braggadocio & storytelling that`ll definitely capture the listener`s attention. A lot of the standout tracks for me are in fact the storytellin` joints...

"Grown Man" featuring Kaotny & Anonymous Twist is an open letter~styled track; a parent speaking to their seed about all the negative shit that they`ve had to do just so the child could be safe & loved, sort of reminded me of that scene from the movie "Menace II Society" when Caine goes to see Pernell in the joint. "Buffalo" & "The Legend Of Dusan Popov" have KDot flexin` some great crime saga tales. Fellow Canadian emcee D-Sisive showS up & spitS a DoPe guest verse on the track "Looking At You", another storytelling joint.....LoL, I`m lovin` `em! At the moment (I`ve only listend to the album all the way thru twice so far) my favorite joint`s "Fire In My Veins", some good ol` rugged hardcore HiP HoP...

Overall all this album is a great listen, K-Dot & the Arkeologists make a good team together, similar to Guru & DJ Premier (my opinion of course). Check the album out for ya`self...

Gotta be real, until I listened to this EP I had no idea who this kat Young Sin was & I have to thank HiP HoP CaNaDa.com for HiPP`n me to this dude. In the mid `90 's Young Sin made the move from Toronto to Vancouver. With a father in a Funk band & a mother who was a local DJ it was only natural that their son would follow into the the footsteps of a musical career. Surrounded by negativity, Young Sin would write rhymes to escape the harsh realities that he faced on a regular basis. It was after link`N up with Lexani (future business partner) that he realized that they had the same ideaS/goalS so Domino Click & MGF Productions was created. While Domino Click & MGF Productions continued to do their thing working with notable katS & at the same time solidifying their movement Young Sin was out makin` a name for himself winning the Beat 94.5 Starmaker competition. In the fourth quarter of 2006, Sin teamed up with Landlokt Records to drop his first album. Anyway, that`s all I know about the homie, check out the EP produced by Moka Only...

KaRDiNaL OFFiSHaLL`s "EyE & I"...

I`ve been a fan of Kardinal Offishall`s music ever since I first heard "Naughty Dread" from the "Rap Essentials" compilation back in `96. I just really DuG how Kardi blended HiP HoP with Soul, Dancehall & Reggae to come up with his own steeZ. His style`s definitely what setS him apart from other emceeS, but he`s also an iLL producer as well! He produced most of fellow Canadian emcee Choclair`s debut album "Ice Cold" & has worked with numerous katS both from the US & Canada such as Busta Rhymes, Spragga Benz, Snow, Pete Rock, Method Man, 50 Cent, Pharoahe Monch, Prince Paul, Lil` Wayne, Stat Quo, Sean Paul, Bounty Killer, Little Brother, Vybz Kartel, Rihanna & Akon. Kardinal is also signed to Akon`s label Konvict Muzik & his new album "Not 4 Sale" will be released thru the label. The first single off the album is "Graveyard Shift" & the ish is BaNG`n like bed head~boardS in cheap motelS on pay~day! Peep the video...

Most folkS have probably seen Kardinal in the Rascalz` hit single "Northern Touch" music video along with Choclair, Checkmate & Thrust from back in the day (around `97). If not here`s the video...

I got a lil` side~track`D from what I was gon` type out, but oh well.....LoL, anyway "Eye & I" is Kardinal`s first album, released on Capitol Hill Music in 1997. Solid production mainly handled by Kardi` himself, Saukrates had his hands in it as well. The lyrics match the uniqueness of his inventive approach to beats. This album doesn`t disappoint, check it out especially if ya` want to peep Kardinal at his hungriest (my opinion of course)...

"WHiTeY DoN"...

Gotta be honest & say at first I only copped this back in `97 because I had seen the video for "Artical" featuring Phife (A Tribe Called Quest) & Chip-Fu (Fu-Schnickens) & was simply lovin` the track. Couldn`t find a 12 Inch or CD single at the time so I just copped the album, was glad I did though simply for the fact that it also has two KRS-One features. I`m a BiG KRS-One fan so it was a nice bonus for me....LoL, anyways this joint in my opinion wasn`t a disappointment. Of course I`m more partial to the the Reggae/HiP HoP influenced tracks like "Artical", "Scatter" & "Lyrical Shot" but the rest of the album`s vibe is nice as well...

I also DiG trackS like "Murderer" & "Looking For Love", which was also featured as the last track on `97's "Booty Call Soundtrack". My homie was over the other day when I was BuMP`n the album & thought it was Shaggy, I could see where he was comin` from but this kat isn`t the Canadian~Shaggy, dude definitely brings his own vibe. Now I do not know much about this kat, but I will share with you what I do know. Whitey Don is a T~DoT [Toronto]~based DJ & singer with an uncanny knowledge of Reggae music & master of it`s dialect. In the early `90's he was the lead singer of Culture Shock, at the time one of Canada`s premier Reggae bands. There ya have it, two whole sentenceS jam pack`D with info`....LoL, sorry y`all but that all I`ve got, well other than the album so check it out for ya`self...

CiTiZeN KaNe`s "DeLiVeRaNCe"...

One of my favorite Canadian HiP HoP groups would have to be Scarborough`s Citizen Kane, consisting of emcees Spade & Kane. When asked about their name this is what they said in a 2004 interview from HipHopCanada.com (you can read it here)...

"The name just like represents - it`s an oxymoron, it`s like you`re Citizen, you`re law-abiding, you`re Kane, you`re a sinner, you know what I mean? So basically we were trying to get something that represents the balance that you have to go through in Life, you have to be law-abiding but you kind of have to be bad…I just thought of it and then we saw the movie and we went with that whole movie theme stuff..."

I think that may be way I really DiG their music, because they kick that true to Life shit that I can relate to. First heard their music on a good ol` college HiP HoP radio show back in around `97-`98, believe it was El Karam`s "One 4 All" on 89.1 fm (Loved that show! BiG Up Karam wherever you`re at now~a~dayS), the trackS were "Lost Angles" & "Reality `N` Facts" (I`m gon` have to DiG them up for y`all) off the Treehouse Records released "The Epic EP", which was produced by ERF Productions & K-Cut (formerly from Main Source). The EP itself was nominated as `Best HiP HoP Album or EP` at the Canadian Urban Music Awards in 1998. A year later they dropped their debut album "Deliverance" produced by Sleepwalkaz Productions, also a Treehouse Records release & it was nominated for `Best Rap Recording` at the 2000 Juno Awards...

Citizen Kane dropped their first single back in `95 titled "Soul Survivor" & it was featured on the "It`s All Good" compilation (I`m actually lookin` for that joint myself). What`s also DoPe is back in 2000 The National Film Board of Canada produced a Rapumentary directed by Alison Duke featuring Citizen Kane titled "Raisin` Kane". This film was awarded best Canadian documentary at the Reel World Film Festival & won the HBO Best Documentary award in New Yorks Urban World Film Festival. The film takeS you on the journey along with Citizen Kane into the world of independent HiP HoP as they release their first album "Deliverance". Anyway, that`s enough ramblin` from me....LoL, this album is great HiP HoP music (my opinion of course:), if ya like rugged beatS & meaningful lyricS with some replay value do ya`self a favor & check it out...
