iCe-T`s "iCe: A MeMoiR Of GaNGSTeR LiFe & ReDeMPTioN FRoM SouTH CeNTRaL To HoLLyWooD"...

Continuing on with the reading posts, I`ve got a book by Ice-T for y`all to check out. I`m just starting to get into it myself so below are a few reviews to give ya an idea of what the book`s about...

Ice: A Memoir Of Gangster Life & Redemption From South Central To Hollywood
Released: 2011
Number Of Pages: 272

Review
Praise for Ice:

“In this intriguing memoir, groundbreaking rapper and actor Ice-T chronicles his rise from nomadic criminal to hip-hop star… Ice-T is a canny businessman, and he charts clearly the decisions that brought him up each step of a very treacherous ladder."
– Publishers Weekly

"In this no-holds-barred memoir, Ice-T writes with refreshing, if profane, down-to-earth candor....A fascinating and inspiring story."
– Booklist (starred)

“A boldly opinionated, bracingly street-tough memoir.”
– Kirkus Reviews

“An enlightening read… For anyone interested in how street smarts are transferable to the entertainment industry.”
– Library Journal

“Ice-T, in short, is someone hip-hop might have invented if he hadn’t invented himself…A goes-down-easy mélange of memoir, self-help, and amateur criminology. Ultimately, Ice showcases an eminently reasonable, positively likeable guy, the gangsta rapper even a parent could love.”
—New York Times Book Review

“It's as cool as its namesake….A fascinating memoir, the pages of which are jam-packed with tales of a guy who ‘actively did everything I rhymed about.’"
—Associated Press

“In his spare, plainspoken autobiography, Ice-T speaks freely and unapologetically…. Ice is a good name for this memoir — its writer is a cool cat.”
—Los Angeles Times

My life’s been a great story / In the ultimate war / Should I ill or do right? / Make peace or go raw?—Ice-T, “Exodus”

He’s a hip-hop icon credited with single-handedly creating gangsta rap in the 1980s. Television viewers know him as Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on the top-rated TV drama Law & Order: SVU. But where the hype and the headlines end, the real story of Ice-T—the one few of his millions of fans have ever heard—truly begins.

Ice is Ice-T in his own words—raw, uncensored, and unafraid to speak his mind. About his orphan upbringing on the gang-infested streets of South Central Los Angeles. About his four-year stint in the U.S. Army’s famed “Tropic Lightning” outfit. About his successful career as a hustler and thief, the car crash that nearly killed him, and the fateful decision to turn away from a life of crime and forge his own path to international entertainment stardom.

Ice by Ice-T is both a tell-it-like-it-is tale of redemption and a star-studded tour of the pop culture firmament. The acclaimed rapper and actor shares never-before-told stories about friends like Tupac, Dick Wolf, Chris Rock, and an antler-clad Flavor Flav, among others. Readers will ride along as Ice-T’s incendiary rock band Body Count narrowly escapes from a riotous mob of angry concertgoers in Milan, and listen in as the music legend battles the self-appointed censors over his controversial “Cop Killer” single.

Most of all, Ice is the place where one of the game’s most opinionated players breaks down his own secret plan for living, offering up candid observations on marriage and monogamy, the current state of hip-hop, and his latest passion: doing one-on-one gang interventions and mentoring at-risk youths around the country.

With insights into the cutthroat world of the street—and the cutthroat world of Hollywood—Ice is the inspirational story of a true American original.

XZiBiT`s "PaPaRaZZi" [CD SiNGLe]...

What`s up y`all? I haven`t been able to post anything up the last week or so because my computer was infected with a virus or something. Needless to say it was totally fucked! Thankfully my lil` bro` was able to put a band~aid on things & get my computer up & running again, much appreciated bro! Now let`s get to the music shall we???

What I have to share with y`all today is a 1996 CD Single from Mr. "Pimp My Ride" a.k.a. Xzibit titled "Paparazzi". The single`s from his solo album "At The Speed Of Life" also released in the same year. I remember this E-Swift produced track very well because it was really the first time that I had heard Xzibit rap. It was gettin` plenty of rotation up on the college Hip Hop radio shows at the time of it`s release. I dug the beat, but really dug the lyrics because Xzibit was spittin` the real. That`s how I was feelin` about the game at the time, actually it`s still pretty much how I feel to this day....LoL, anyways give it a listen I know you enjoy it...

Label: RCA
Released: 1996

1. Paparazzi [Radio Version Clean]
2. Paparazzi [Club Version Dirty]
3. Paparazzi [Instr.]
4. Paparazzi [A Cappella]

WyCLeF`s "GoNe TiLL NoVeMBeR (The ReMiX)" [CD SiNGLe]...

Gon` jump back to 1998 with this post....LoL, what I have for y`all is Wyclef Jean`s CD Single for the "Gone Till November Remix". On this single you get 3 tracks plus the Instrumental for the "Gone Till November Remix", all 3 songs are pretty DoPe so ya won`t be disappointed. However my favorite track is the last one titled "No Airplay - Men In Blue", I just really like the beat on this one! Canibus, Khadejia Bass & R. Kelly all show up to help `Clef out on the "Gone Till November [Making Runs Remix]". It`s a decent joint, however I still kind of prefer the original version myself. The "Guantanamera Remix" has a nice lil` twist of Reggae courtesy of an uncredited appearance from Beenie Man. So go on & check out the music, I sure you`ll enjoy...

Label: Ruffhouse/ Columbia
Released: 1998

1. Gone Till November [The Makin` Runs Rmx] {ft. Canibus, Khadejia Bass & R. Kelly}
2. Gone Till November [The Makin` Runs Rmx Instr.]

SouRCe MaGaZiNe iSSue #22 (JuLy 1991)...

Today`s gon` be another one of my Get Your Read On posts, hope y`all enjoyed the last one. I`ve decided that I`m going to start sharing with y`all some scans of some old Hip Hop magazines. So I`m gon` start things off with The Source. If for some reason you don`t happen to know what I`m referring to I will give you a lil` rundown, but honestly this is something that you should know about if you`re in to Hip Hop at all......LoL, unlike what The Source magazine has become today, back in it`s beginning years it was almost considered to be like a 'Hip Hop Bible'. If you were mentioned in that mag, whether thru an interview, an album review, their Unsigned Hype column, their Hip Hop Quotable, etc. it was an Orka BiG deal!!!

The mag` originally started back in 1988 as just a lil` newsletter created by 4 friends who were attending Harvard University at the time. David Mays was the publisher, Jon Shecter was the editor-in-chief, while James Benard was the senior editor & Ed Young took on the role of associate publisher. As time progressed just like Hip Hop The Source magazine began to grow, it`s original editors resigned & others took their place. It was lookin` real good for a few years, things were blowin` up for both Hip Hop & The Source magazine...

Unfortunately though, all good things come to an end eventually & even though The Source magazine is still currently in publication now -- it`s safe to say that the day David Mays decided to make Raymond Scott, or as the Hip Hop world knows him Benzino, a co-owner of The Source magazine was the day that the honor & respect the mag` once held was lost FOREVER!!!

Benzino had his foot in the door long before he became a co-owner though. You see Benzino was a part of this Hip Hop group from Boston called the Almighty RSO, his crew needed some credibility so Benzino stepped to David Mays & asked him to be the group`s manager. Mays accepted, using Mays` connections within the industry Benzino was able to work out a deal for his group with Tommy Boy Records. Later on, sometime in 1994 Benzino stepped to Mays` & pressured him into placing a 3-page article about the Almighty RSO in an issue of The Source against the will of the editors at the time, the article was done & many of the magazine`s staff walked out because of this...

From then on Benzino & his crew (Almighty RSO/ Made Men) were given much favorable coverage in the magazine. An example of this is back in 1999 Benzino`s crew Made Men (a revamped Almighty RSO) released the album titled "Classic Limited Edition" & it was given a 4-and-a-half mic rating in The Source magazine. The funny thing is that apparently the actual writer that 'reviewed' the album doesn`t even exist. Obviously once the word got out that Benzino was able to manipulate the 'mic rating system' in his favor the magazine lost most of it`s credibility in Hip Hop`s eyes...

Fast~forward to 2002, Benzino`s engaged in a beef with Eminem. The beef stems from Eminem DiSS`n The Source magazine because he felt that his "Mashall Mathers LP" should`ve received a 5 mic rating. So Benzino started firing back with his own DiSSeS, he claimed that Eminem wasn`t being 'real' & true to the Hip Hop culture. The two traded DiSS records back & forth for a while, in the end when the smoke cleared it was easy to see that Eminem was the winner of the battle because Hip Hop`s fans made it clear that they hated Benzino for what he was doin`...

Still bitter about his place in Hip Hop Benzino came up with another way to take shots at Eminem`s credibility, his plan was to use The Source magazine to do his dirty work. David Mays & Benzino were able to dig up some old tapes of a young Eminem spittin` some racist rhymes about Black women. There was an entire issue dedicated to the discovery of these racist rhymes of Eminem`s as well as some articles about how Eminem was bad for the Hip Hop culture. With no choice Eminem manned up apologized & admitted to spitting the raps on these tapes, but he also gave his side of the story which was that he did those freestyles after a bad break~up with his girlfriend at the time (who was Black)...

With all this buzz surrounding these tapes The Source announced that they were planning to include a CD of these Eminem freestyles with an upcoming issue of it`s magazine. Once Eminem caught wind of the idea he sued The Source for copyright infringement & defamation of character. The Federal Courts allowed an injunction that would limit the distribution of the tape`s lyrical content, however The Source magazine ignored all that & published the lyrics on their website as well as in their magazine. By doing this The Source was found to be in contempt of court & were forced to pay Eminem a good chunk of compensation...

Eventually, in around 2005 Eminem & his legal team decided to drop the lawsuit claiming that there was no longer any issues between Eminem & The Source magazine. Eventually Benzino stepped down from his position as co-owner of The Source, I`m pretty sure he decided to do this before he ended up actually being forced to leave. There was plenty of other ish that happened following this, but I don`t really feel like spending the time on it....LoL

So that`s my lil` rundown on The Source magazine, I still can`t believe how it was all allowed to happen. It`s kind of funny how Benzino was accusing Eminem of being a fake, an industry clone when in actuality it was he who was just that. Anyway I got a lil` sidetracked with this post, so let me get to the point.....LoL, thanks to Larry2times I`m able to share with y`all issue #22 of The Source magazine originally published back in July 1991. Check it out & enjoy...

GZA`s "BeNeaTH The SuRFaCe"...

What`s up y`all? Hope all is good, I`ve been enjoying some of the decent weather that we`ve been having here in the O~DouBLe T. It`s almost feelin` like Spring & I really can`t wait......LoL, I`m just sooooooo sick of this white substance called snow that`s been occupying most of the ground. Anyway, I was planning on posting up some Biggie related material seeing as how it`s been 15 years since his passing, but unfortunately I have misplaced the CD`s I was going to share. You`ll get them joints once I find `em....LoL, for now I have some GZA for your listening pleasure...

"Beneath The Surface" is the GZA`s third solo album, released back in 1999 thru MCA Records. One thing that was kind of surprising to me about the album is that RZA only produced one track. Guess he decided to let a few of the other Wu beatsmiths put in some work. Inspectah Deck, Arabian Knight, Mathematics & John The Baptist all provide some decent backdrops for the GZA`s lyrical liquid swords. One of the downsides though, at least for me was that there isn`t any Kung-Fu samples used like they were on "Liquid Swords" or any other Wu-Tang album at the time. I just think that when they`re used in the right manner it`s DoPe, it kind of adds a lil` signature stamp to the Wu`s music...

I`ll chalk it up to wanting to try something different. If you compare how "Beneath The Surface" sounds production~wise to "Liquid Swords", you`ll notice that it has a more polished sound in comparison to the gritty & dusty sounds found on "Liquid Swords". Overall I think that this album`s a good listen, sure it may not be as DoPe as his previous effort but it`s definitely far from being considered wack. The GZA`s lyrics are iLL as always, but it`s mainly the skits & the beats that kind of take away from the album. There`s some great tracks on here like "Beneath The Surface", "Breaker, Breaker" & "Publicity" but there`s just not enough to make me write home to my mama about.....LoL, anyways check out the music for yourself it`s worth the listen...

PLaNeT ASiA & G_FoRCe`s "CaMouFLaGe JaCKeTs"...

Here`s a lil` something that I was hipp`D to by my good homie K-NyNe, I believe that it was released in 2011 as a free download. What I`m referring to is "Camouflage Jackets", a collabo` album from Planet Asia & producer G_Force. This album was actually recorded back in 2008, after G_Force (only 18 at the time) connected with Asia thru the then~popular MySpace. After impressing Asia the two began working together, trading verses & beats thru emails, MySpace messages & file transfers...

At one point the duo was signed to Talib Kweli`s label BlackSmith, but nothing ever came to fruition. Four years later G & Asia eventually decide to drop the project as a free download instead of lettin` these gems sit & collect dust, a great & marvelous idea I might add......LoL, If you`re a sample junky then these beats should definitely appeal to you since G_Force uses everything from Reggae & Dub records to Classic Soul to create the foundations for Planet Asia to deliver some of his iLLeST work on the mic. Do yourself a favor & check this out, you won`t be disappointed...

MiSTeR Cee`s BiG L HoT 97 TRiBuTe MiX...

Here`s a lil` something for y`all Big L fans out there. What I`ve got for y`all today is the lil` 20 min set that Mister Cee did on Hot 97 as a tribute to Big L. Hard to believe that it`s already been 13 years, man where does the time go? Anyway this joint`s all one 20 minute long mp3 file. There`s really only 2 things that I didn`t like about this tribute. First of all the tracks are edited, but since it was done for the radio air~waves that`s forgivable. What sucks like $2 hooker$ on pay day is that Mister Cee couldn`t just dedicate 20 minutes for Big L without any interruptions, aside from that though it`s a decent mix. So give it a listen & celebrate the Life & music of Big L...

MaSTeR P`s "iF I CouLD CHaNGe" [PRoMo CD SiNGLe]...

I`m still on a No Limit Records kick y`all so here`s another CD Single from Master P. This joint was released in 1997 & comes from the "I`m Bout It Soundtrack". I remember the "If I Could Change" song because it`s how I was first introduced to Master P & his No Limit empire. It was actually the video that I had seen, it was on some shortly ran HiP HoP music video show (can`t recall the name of the show sorry). They were actually talkin` to P about the "I`m Bout It" movie & his whole label & ish while showin` some behind the scenes footage of the video shoot for "If I Could Change". It was cool, some of the stuff P was talkin` about was pretty interesting. I may still have the VHS tape that I recorded the show on, if I can find it I`ll try & upload the segment I was just talkin` about...

With this single here you are getting the Street, Radio & Instrumental versions of "If I Could Change", a track that features Master P & Steady Mobb`n with O`Dell singin` on the hook, while you only get the Street version of Mia X`s "Down To Do Whatever". DJ Daryl produced "If I Could Change" & KLC handled the production for Mia X`s "Down To Do Whatever". Both joints are a decent listen, though I prefer the Master P & Steady Mobb`n collabo` "If I Could Change" more than Mia X`s track. It just has more substance than Mia`s tough~talkin` braggadocio joint. Anyway, go ahead & check out the music...

Label: No Limit Records
Released: 1997

1. If I Could Change [Street/ Movie Version] {ft. Steady Mobb`n, Mo B. Dick & O`Dell}
2. If I Could Change [Radio] {ft. Steady Mobb`n, Mo B. Dick & O`Dell}

4. If I Could Change [Instr.]
