MoNDaY CiNeMa: "PRiSoN SoNG"...
Alright, since I`m starting to feel a little better today I figured that I would try & post up a lil` something for y`all. I`ve been pretty sick with the Flu or some ish since Wednesday, had a fever, body aches, pounding all-day long lasting headaches, the always enjoyable runny nose (that`s sarcasm if ya didn`t catch it), annoyingly vicious coughing (still got that though). Needless to say I wouldn`t wish this ish on anyone, not even my enemies so I hope that you all are in good health. Anyways, I wanted to try something a lil` different by posting up a movie. I have always wanted to share movies on this blog, but since it`s so much more time consuming I just kind of skipped it altogether. Never had or have the time to spend the hours that it would take to upload the flicks, then also having to worry about the possibility of them getting taken down after spending all that time uploading them. So then it came to me since most folks prefer to stream ish anyway why not just use movies that I can find on good ol` YouTube? Sure it may be a lil` lazy on my part, but hey you guys can still view some movies & if you prefer to DL them well there`s a whole lot of easy ways to use browser add-ons to download straight from YouTube. So it`s a win-win situation for us all.....LoL, I save some time & y`all are still entertained...
I was thinkin` of calling these series of posts "MoNDaY CiNeMa", ya I know it`s kind of generic & corny but hey that`s all I can come up with a the moment. If you have a better suggestion feel free to leave it in a comment on this post. BiG uP RapWiseTV/RapWise.com for uploading the flick to YouTube, much appreciated! Seriously, I first found this movie back in 2002 at the local video store (yes folks at one point in time you could actually go to a retail store to rent movies) & it was on VHS not DVD. Oh yeah, let me share the title of it with you so you guys know what I`m talking about....LoL, it`s called "Prison Song".
Anyway, I seen that Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige & Fat Joe were in the movie so being the BiG Hip Hop head that I was/still am I decided to rent it. Didn`t matter that I had never even heard of the movie, didn`t know of it until I picked it up off the video store`s shelf that day. More importantly though, it didn`t even matter that I had no clue on what it was about. Ya see back in the day I just rented any & every "hood" movie that I came across, especially if it had some rappers in it.....LoL, this means unfortunately that I have wasted more than a few hours of my Life watching some wack/weak movies, but still I give `em all a chance with an open mind. After all you never know what diamond in the rough you might find.....Ha~Hah, corny but true! So back to the movie, I rented it & ended up hooking up my 2 VCRs (yeah I was ballin`....LoL) together so I could make a copy for myself. It`s kind of funny because I still have that dubbed copy at my parents` crib somewhere in the basement in a box. Too bad I don`t have a VCR any more.....LoL, I DL`d this joint from YouTube anyway so I`m good...
As for "Prison Song" it`s a decent movie that was released in 2001, directed by Darnell Martin who also wrote the movie alongside Q-Tip. A few of the cast members that y`all heads may be familiar with are; Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige (her acting debut), Fat Joe, Snow (you know "Informer"), Noreaga & 'Bobbito' Garcia a.k.a. DJ Cucumberslice (Stretch & Bobbito Show). With that said, let me just give you a little heads up that this movie is somewhat of a musical. Yes there`s some singing or rappin` done as the characters` dialogue at times, but it`s not a full-on musical like it was originally intended to be. So it`s not all show-tunesy....LoL, I found that the singing or rappin` transitions were done more naturally. Obviously not every time, but for the most part it was still pretty easy to get into the movie`s emotionally driven story. I`m not a fan of musicals at all, but I still found it to be interesting enough to watch. Q-Tip does a solid job taking the viewers on an emotional roller coaster ride, you can`t help but feel sorry for Elijah (his character`s name). The movie`s story line is one of actions & consequences, so check it out...

"TouGHeR THaN LeaTHeR" [MoViE]...
What`s up y`all? Today I`m gon` share with y`all somewhat of a hidden gem, it comes in the form of a film from 1988 titled "Tougher Than Leather". It stars Run DMC, Russell Simmons & Rick Rubin, but also has lil` cameos from the Beastie Boys & even Slick Rick. It`s not the iLLeST written movie & probably falls into the B-Movie category, but for a fan of Hip Hop it`s definitely worth at least one viewing. A quick summary of this flick goes a lil` somethin` like this; Run DMC gets signed to a record label run by Vic Ferrante (played by Rick Rubin). Vic`s label`s actually a front, he`s using it to launder his father`s dirty money. Obviously with a label like that some grimy ish was happening behind the scenes & unfortunately for Runny Ray (one of Run DMC`s homies) he happens to see Vic & his boys killing someone so he ends up gettin` murked as well. Run DMC finds out about their boy being murdered & that sends `em on a mission to track down his killer. I kept the summary pretty basic so I didn`t ruin the movie for ya......LoL, just so ya know it`s in .flv file format which isn`t the best quality I know, but that`s the format I had so it is what it is. You can view it using the VLC Player without an issue...

"TRiPPiN`"...
Greg is near the end of his senior year in high school, wanting to go to the prom, eyeing Cinny (the school's beauty with brains) from afar, and regularly trippin', daydreaming about being a big success as a poet, a student, a lover. His mom wants him to apply to colleges, but Greg hasn't a clue. One of his teachers, Mr. Shapic, tries to inspire him, too. He finally figures out he can get close to Cinny if he asks her for help with college applications. But friendship isn't enough, he wants romance and a prom date. So, he tells a few lies and, for awhile, it seems to be working. Then, things fall apart and Greg has to figure out how to put the trippin aside and get real...
^I didn`t write that...LoL

"FoRT APaCHe, The BRoNX"...
From the sight of a police officer this movie depicts the life in New York`s infamous South Bronx. In the center is "Fort Apache", as the officers call their police station, which really seems like an outpost in enemy`s country. The story follows officer Murphy, who seems to be a tuff cynic, but in truth he's a moralist with a sense for justice...

ReDMaN & MeTHoD MaN in "HoW HiGH"...
What`s up y`all? Hope all is good with ya, today I have a lil` movie for y`all enjoyment. This Comedy joint is from 2001 & stars Redman & Method Man, that`s right you guessed it....the movie that I`m sharing with y`all today is titled "How High". I seen this flick in the theater with my homie Abe back when it was first released. It`s a decent joint, definitely a movie ya smoke to......LoL, you`ll see a few familiar faces in the cast of this flick. You have Mike Epps (think Day-Day from "Next Friday"), Lark Voorhies (think Lisa from the "Saved By The Bell" TV show), Essence Atkins (think Tasha from the "Smart Guy" TV series) & even Cypress Hill make a lil` cameo appearance...
Now for those that don`t know what the movie`s about I will give ya a lil` summary without any spoilers. The film`s two main characters Silas P. Silas (played by Method Man) & Jamal King (played by Redman) lose their good friend Ivory in a crazy Weed~related dreadlock fire accident. In a sentimental move they decide to grow some Marijuana in Ivory`s ashes, the outcome`s pretty funny. The spirit of their deceased friend comes back whenever they smoke the Weed that they grew in his ashes. So they end up using this spiritual connection to help get them both into Harvard. Once they arrive both Jamal & Silas flip the Ivy Leaguer`s lives upside down in a way only true Buddah smokers could do. So go on, check out the flick for some laughs you won`t be disappointed...

"SCaRFaCe 4 LiFe"...
Got a lil` documentary for y`all to check out by Troy Reed, he`s also done “The Larry Davis Story”, “Game Over” & “The Guy Fisher Story” to name a few. Anyway this doc` focuses on Rikers Island -- for those that aren`t from planet Earth, it`s known as New York City`s most notorious correctional facility. Troy exposes the viewers to some brutal inmate slashings, police corruption & everyday Life on 'The Island' during the late 1980's & early `90's...
This doc` includes interviews with former inmates & officers, what ya hear will definitely make ya want to stay up out of prison! Check out Pistol Pete`s interview (he put in somethin` like 17 years there) & Charlie Rock LD`s interview, he did 10 years. In an interview with AllHiPHoP.com (you can read it here) Troy explains how "Scarface 4 Life" came to be; "A former correction officer Lorenzo Steele presented me with these pictures of guys that got cut in Rikers Island & we decided we were going to do something"...
So if you`re interested go head & check it out...

"WeLCoMe To DeaTH RoW"...
This flick`s gotta be one of the better documentaries on Death Row Records, it gets an easy 3.5 out of 5 from me. Now of course Tha Row`s story has been covered many times, but it`s the way writer/ director Jeff Scheftel put it together. All the info` that`s shared with the viewer is great, lots of behind the scene ish. It`s Murphy`s Law...great empires fall & Tha Row hit with a tremendous impact when they finally reached rock bottom. It`s all covered in this movie, so check it out...

Being the man that I am, one of the few weaknesses I have is the love for a nice phat ass (on a woman this is, don`t get it twisted:), so that`s basically what possessed me to post up this joint. It`s nothing really all that spectacular, however it does have Buffie "The Body" & Deelishis (Flava Of Love fame) hosting & it also features 50 of the sexiest skrippaz, pole dancers, models & rump-shakers -- really that`s all I need to say...

"SouTH CeNTRaL"...[MoViE]
Here`s a 'hood~flick' from the early `90's that doesn`t really get much light, overshadowed by "Boyz N The Hood", "New Jack City" & "Menace II Society". It may have something to do with the fact that it`s more emotional, not shoot `em up BaNG~BaNG...LoL, anyways the movie takes place in L.A. & opens up with young Bobby Johnson (Glenn Plummer...think Parnell in "Menace II Society") BouNCiN` from jail. After getting into some BeeF with Genie Lamp, a local DRuG~JuGGLeR, Johnson CaPS Genie`s Lamp. He stays on the low for a couple of months, then decides to roll out with a few other fellow Deuce gang MeMBeRS. Along the way, unfortunately for them, they happen to pick up an undercover cop who ends up BuST`n them for possession...
While Johnson`s being questioned by the PoRK~CHoP PaTRoL the newly proclaimed O.G's FiNGeRPRiNTS are match`D to the PRiNTS on the silencer & gun he used to murk Genie. STiCK`n to the code of the STReeTS he takes all the heat & ends up having to serve a dime (10 yearS) in prison. It`s while locked up he finds one of his ol` Deuce HoMieS, Loco & he tells Johnson that his own son, Jimmie is becoming a member of Deuce, stealing stereos for Ray Ray, the leader of the Deuce gang. Johnson has to fight in order to try & get his son out of the gang Life, to keep him from making the same mistakes he did. He has to convince Jimmie that being in a gang, everything that he lived his Life for, is not worth the price you pay...

"The MaCk"...[MoVie]
After watch this joint it`s pretty easy to see the influence that it`s had on the HiP HoP culture & those that represent it, from the emcees/rapper$, DJ`s & B-BoyS/GiRLS to the regular JillS & JoeS that cop the albumS & go to the concertS. Right off the top rapper$ like Snoop Dogg & Too $hort come to my mind, especially the latter seeing as how the movie was filmed on location in Oakland, California. $hort`s in my opinion sort of like HiP HoP`s "Mack".....LoL, but honestly I`m not wrong if ya really look at thingS. Anyway, what`s iLL about this flick is that much like early HiP HoP music it`s got that real grimy~grittiness to it, which is something that Michael Campus (Director) wouldn`t have been able to capture working on a soundstage...
Max Julien plays the role of "Goldie", Richard Pryor plays "Slim" & at the beginning of the flick they`re caught up in some junkyard gun~play. Outnumbered "Goldie" tellS "Slim" to get to KiCK`n rockS, he escapes but "Goldie" endS up in the pen` to serve a nickel (that`s 5 yearS for you squareS :). Once released he tries to piece his Life back together & visits his bro` "Olinga" (molded after Huey Long), played by Roger E. Mosley. "Goldie" comes to the revelation that he`s got 2 choices; the way of "The Mack" or that of his bro`s. Obviously he chooses the first, connecting up with "Slim" once again while takin` in some Obi Wan Kenobi~type PiMP`n wisdom jewelS from an older blind man, played by Paul Harris -- "Magnum P.I." mu` fuckas....LoL
Now that`s all I`m gon` say about the movie `cuz I`m not trying to ruin it for y`all, just remember to use to trick I mentioned in the Snoop movie post to avoid all that pop up & clickin` ish...

"Da GaMe Of LiFe" [MoVie]...
This movie, or short film was put together while Snoop was signed to No Limit Records, originally dropped in the VHS format in 1998 & was later re-released in 2004 as a DVD. Now the movie itself doesn`t feature the best acting skillS, but the storyline is alright - I`d give it a 2 out of 5. It features C-Murder as "Money" & Snoop Dogg playing the role of "Smooth" in a sort hood remake of "Casino". This joint also includes a couple of 'never seen before' videos that have been banned from TV, guess due to the X-rated content...LoL
