CaM`RoN`s "SeX, DRuGs & EnTeRTaiNMeNT [Advance HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

What`s good? What`s happenin`?? What`s lovely my people??? It`s been a good minute since I`ve posted up something, I do apologize but I blame Life....LoL anyways yo what I have for y`all is something that I`m almost certain you`ll enjoy. Was it worth the wait? Perhaps, it all depends on yourself really. I`m going to take things back to a time when record labels would actually use promo/advance copies of an album to do just that PROMOTE the album. It was an interesting time indeed if you were a Hip Hop fan because you`d end up with some slight differences between the advance & retail versions of the album. Whether it was track sequencing, song title changes, sample clearance issues resulting in a slight change in the beat of a song, tracks not appearing at all or albums getting shelved for whatever industry issue. So there`s always a reason to peep an advanced copy of an album, especially if it`s from the 1990`s or early 2000`s...

With that being said I`m going to take things back to the year 2000 when Cam`Ron was set to drop his second album "Sex, Drugs & Entertainment" ("S.D.E." for y`all abbreviating mu` fuckas) with the Epic record label. At the time online peer-to-peer file sharing (Napster, Limewire, etc.) was probably at it`s highest, so labels were really pushing 'advance/promo' copies of their releases. Now perhaps I may be giving records labels more credit than they deserve, but I think that one way labels still kept an interest in their releases was to create these 'advanced versions' that were intentionally different than the retail versions, then again that`s my 2021 view on it. I mean that`s what I would have done! Think about it, even if folks get a hold of & download the promo~advance it`s not the retail. Sure, they could just eventually DL the the retail as well but it`s still an extra step they`d need to take & not everyone is computer/online savvy so it`ll lead to sales regardless because people are lazy...

So back to Cam`Ron`s "Sex, Drugs & Entertainment" album.......this isn`t it. Nope what I`ve got to share with y`all is the Advanced version of said album. Yup, it`s nothing like the retail. Sure some songs are the same but honestly like my homie BaZooKa KooPa said to me, "Dogg, this shit is just flowin` fluid like your Rum & Coke in a straw....Ha~HaH, the album`s OK, but this shit right here homie, this shit right here should`ve been the album!" Ya know what? I TOTALLY concur with ol` BaZ` Ko` because honestly it is just that, more connective with the tracks & even the skits/interludes. Someone deserves credit fo` sho` because they did Cam` some justice with this version without question. I dug it so much I decided to give it an HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN touch & that`s what y`all are getting right here...

 

 

 

First off BiG~uP kingsol81 for hookin` me up with the original Advance copy after I searched for it & came up shorter than my patience in the DMV line on a Monday morning, much appreciated homie! After listening to it I had to of course compare it to the retail, you know for research purposes & even tho some of the songs & skits are the same I still feel that the track~sequencing of the Advance Copy is waaaaay better than the retail! So much more fluid like I mentioned before. I`ll definitely take "I Don`t Like You" (the Charli Baltimore collabo`), the "Bitches Ain`t Shit" flip (featuring McGruff, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana & Keema),"When A Nigga`s Fed Up" & "Gimme Some Head" featuring Keema over the Honey collabo` "That`s Me", "Freak", "All The Chickens" & "What Means The World To You" featuring Keema...which is basically just a PG-13 toned down "Gimme Some Head"...

Although I really DiG the Advance Copy of "Sex, Drugs & Entertainment" I did find that it was just a bit low on the volume side of things on a lot of the tracks, so I had to BuMP them uP a bit. While I was editing the volume of some of the tracks I also decided to split the skits into their own tracks, simply for easier listening purposes. Sometimes ya just want to get to the music & skits get in the way. There was also a few tracks that had skips & pops/clicks in them so I did my best to try & edit them out. It started on track 20, 21 & 25. In fact, "Why No" was skipping so much so in the beginning that I had to cut it out & mix in the version from the retail album because I just wasn`t trying to spend the time editing every single one of the skips because there was too many for me to bother dealing with. I wanted to keep things as O.G. as possible so I didn`t just switch up all the tracks that were the same as on the retail album because it would take away from the 'digital griminess' of the Advance. So all I`ve done when puttin` my touch on this HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN was BuMP uP the volume on the tracks, split the skits into their own individual tracks & try to edit out some pops, clicks & skips from a few tracks, as well as add 2 joints to the end that just had to be on here; "Hustler" & "Too Late"...

 

 

 Standout joints for me are; "Do It Again" somethin` about that hook had me reciting it hours after listening....LoL, "Still High Till We Die (Come Kill Me)" is probably my fav` joint on here, "I Don`t Like You" I dig how Cam` & Charli go back & forth on here they have some solid chemistry on this song, "Let Me Know", "Double Up", "Losin` Weight" is a solid collabo` with Prodigy, "Bitches Ain`t Shit" is a decent Easy Coast flip of Dr. Dre classic tune of the same name, "Gimme Some Head" featuring Keema is a solid joint & should`ve been on the retail version of the album with "What Means The World To You?" being used as it`s radio version instead but hey that`s just me. While I`m speaking about Keema, does anyone have any more info` on her? "S.D.E. (Sports, Drugs & Entertainment)" is great, listeners will dig the Biggie & Jay-Z samples used. Finally we get to "Hustler" & "Too Late" which both should have been on the retail album. So there ya have it, check it out & enjoy...

Alright, since I`m starting to feel a little better today I figured that I would try & post up a lil` something for y`all. I`ve been pretty sick with the Flu or some ish since Wednesday, had a fever, body aches, pounding all-day long lasting headaches, the always enjoyable runny nose (that`s sarcasm if ya didn`t catch it), annoyingly vicious coughing (still got that though). Needless to say I wouldn`t wish this ish on anyone, not even my enemies so I hope that you all are in good health. Anyways, I wanted to try something a lil` different by posting up a movie. I have always wanted to share movies on this blog, but since it`s so much more time consuming I just kind of skipped it altogether. Never had or have the time to spend the hours that it would take to upload the flicks, then also having to worry about the possibility of them getting taken down after spending all that time uploading them. So then it came to me since most folks prefer to stream ish anyway why not just use movies that I can find on good ol` YouTube? Sure it may be a lil` lazy on my part, but hey you guys can still view some movies & if you prefer to DL them well there`s a whole lot of easy ways to use browser add-ons to download straight from YouTube. So it`s a win-win situation for us all.....LoL, I save some time & y`all are still entertained...

I was thinkin` of calling these series of posts "MoNDaY CiNeMa", ya I know it`s kind of generic & corny but hey that`s all I can come up with a the moment. Seriously, I first found this movie back in 2002 at the local video store (yes folks at one point in time you could actually go to a retail store to rent movies) & it was on VHS not DVD. Oh yeah, let me share the title of it with you so you guys know what I`m talking about....LoL, it`s called "Prison Song". 

Anyway, I seen that Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige & Fat Joe were in the movie so being the BiG Hip Hop head that I was/still am I decided to rent it. Didn`t matter that I had never even heard of the movie, didn`t know of it until I picked it up off the video store`s shelf that day. More importantly though, it didn`t even matter that I had no clue on what it was about. Ya see back in the day I just rented any & every "hood" movie that I came across, especially if it had some rappers in it.....LoL, this means unfortunately that I have wasted more than a few hours of my Life watching some wack/weak movies, but still I give `em all a chance with an open mind. After all you never know what diamond in the rough you might find.....Ha~Hah, corny but true! So back to the movie, I rented it & ended up hooking up my 2 VCRs (yeah I was ballin`....LoL) together so I could make a copy for myself. It`s kind of funny because I still have that dubbed copy at my parents` crib somewhere in the basement in a box. Too bad I don`t have a VCR any more.....LoL, I DL`d this joint from YouTube anyway so I`m good...

As for "Prison Song" it`s a decent movie that was released in 2001, directed by Darnell Martin who also wrote the movie alongside Q-Tip. A few of the cast members that y`all heads may be familiar with are; Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige (her acting debut), Fat Joe, Snow (you know "Informer"), Noreaga & 'Bobbito' Garcia a.k.a. DJ Cucumberslice (Stretch & Bobbito Show). With that said, let me just give you a little heads up that this movie is somewhat of a musical. Yes there`s some singing or rappin` done as the characters` dialogue at times, but it`s not a full-on musical like it was originally intended to be. So it`s not all show-tunesy....LoL, I found that the singing or rappin` transitions were done more naturally. Obviously not every time, but for the most part it was still pretty easy to get into the movie`s emotionally driven story. I`m not a fan of musicals at all, but I still found it to be interesting enough to watch. Q-Tip does a solid job taking the viewers on an emotional roller coaster ride, you can`t help but feel sorry for Elijah (his character`s name). The movie`s story line is one of actions & consequences, so check it out...

What`s up y`all? Hope all is well & Life hasn`t been stressin` ya too hard! If it has don`t let it get you all down & depressed because Life itself isn`t as long as ya think, you may not wake up tomorrow. So enjoy your days alive while you have them, I know it`s a lot easier to say than it is to do but trust me you don`t want your last day on Earth to be spent being mad at someone you love because of some petty ish! Anyways I`m done rambling on about Life, guess I just got a lil` caught up since the month that just passed (March) reminded me of how precious Life really is. The reason? Well Hip Hop lost Magic (of No Limit Records fame) on March 1st, Biggie on March 9th, Nate Dogg on March 15th, Eazy-E on March 26th & Freaky Tah on March 28th. I`m sure if ya wanted to get technical every month of the year probably has a big list of fallen soldiers, I may have even missed a few in March, but it just hit me hard because 3 of my favorite emcees (Biggie, Eazy-E & Nate Dogg) died in March. Unlike 2Pac these kats didn`t leave behind much unreleased material, at least to my knowledge anyway. So it just made me think about how short & precious ya` Life really is. Then after diggin` up this album from fallen emcee E Moneybags (because folks have been requesting a re~up) & hearing the potential that this kat had that was cut short, it`s really sad. Hip Hop has lost many great artists before they even had a chance to reach their prime, but that`s a story for another post...

 

 

 
Let`s get to this re~up shall we? The album in question is E Moneybags` "In E Moneybags We Trust". First thing`s first, I`m not sure if the tunes I have to share with y`all are from a cassette rip or maybe the CD source they were ripped from wasn`t of the best quality sound~wise or maybe that`s just how they originally sound like, either way the sound quality isn`t that great. Forgive me for not knowing much about this album, I believe that it was released independently in 1999 thru Grand Imperial Records, a label that Moneybags co-owned along with Majesty of the Live Squad. It`s not that long of a listen with its short running time of just over 35 minutes in length, but that doesn`t mean that it`s not worth checking out. E Moneybags definitely had some talent, but sadly Eric Smith a.k.a. E-Money Bags to the Hip Hop world, had his recording career along with his Life cut short on July 16th, 2001 while he sat in his Lincoln Navigator parked on a street in Queens Village, New York. His Navigator was reigned on by a hail of bullets, over 40 rounds from 3 different shooters. Moneybags was hit by 10 of the shots fired & died shortly after. Eric`s shooting was planned out by Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff in retaliation for the 1999 murder of Colbert "Black Just" Johnson, an associate of McGriff`s. A month later (August 2001) police found a videotape & on the video filmed from July 13, 2001 to July 16, 2001, E Moneybags is seen driving & parking his Navigator on the Queens Village street where he was later gunned down that night at 9:45pm...

 
The video was filmed by 2 of McGriff`s associates; Dennis "Divine" Crosby, a drug~dealer & his girlfriend Nicole Brown. Six years later in February 2007 the Supreme Team`s founder Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff was found guilty for ordering the hits on Eric "E-Money Bags" Smith & Troy Singleton in 2001. He was sentenced to Life for the murders & other drug~related crimes. As for E Money Bags, I don`t know much about him. Actually the only thing that I knew prior to doing a little research was that he repp`D Lefrak in Corona, Queens, had lots of ReSPeCT in the streets & had worked with the likes of Kool G. Rap, Prodigy, Nas, Capone-N-Noreaga, Live Squad & even the late great 2Pac to name a few. "In E Moneybags We Trust" was his first & only album released in 1999 with featured appearances by Nature, Nas, Capone-N-Noreaga, Live Squad, Kool G. Rap, Horse, Maze, Musolini, Diesel & the Show Boyz. So let`s get into my thoughts on it shall we???

 

Things open up with an Intro (how surprising, I know right?....LoL) that apparently features Capone of Capone-N-Noreaga fame, but it`s actually just a vocal sample taken from the "Capone Phone Home Outro" off the "War Report" album mixed into a pretty nice beat. The sample just gets looped thru~out the beat, so it`s not really anything that you`ll need to hear more than once unless you really like the beat of course. The first song on the album is "Regulate", a DoPe song backed by a sweet instrumental. It`s just a shame that they cut it so short. I know that there is a version of this song that features Prodigy of Mobb Deep (probably released posthumously) & it does seem as though they just cut out the rest of the song for some reason. It would have been great to hear the entire song, but it is what it is. "Ain`t Got A Clue" uses a Foxy Brown vocal sample taken from "Affirmative Action" for the hook. The beat uses a loop that is somewhat simplistic, but it doesn`t matter much once the drums kick in `cuz it holds a definite New York vibe to it. E Moneybags spits that street braggadocio ish, but he does it well...

 



"All They Do Is This" features the Showboys. I had no clue about the Showboys, but then the homie jackP over on Bomb 1st schooled me on `em a bit which was much appreciated! The Showboys are a duo that rep Queens, New York. Members consisted of Triggaman & Bugs Can Can, they first hit the Hip Hop World in 1985 with the Profile Records released "The Ten Laws Of Rap b/w Cold Frontin`" 12 inch single. Then in 1986 they released another single called "Drag Rap (Trigger Man)", which later on received somewhat of a revival of sorts when plenty of artists down South, mainly in New Orleans & Memphis ended up using it as a foundation for some of their Bounce style records. In 1991 the Boys released another 12 inch single titled "Gangster Walk" thru Get Buck Records & in 2000 they released their debut album titled "YIIG`$" thru PaperGame Records. Long story short The Showboys are the kats who ended up taking Stretch (of Live Squad) from the streets to the recording studio & under their wing...

So let`s get back to "All They Do Is This", this joint is probably my least favorite on the album. It`s not completely wack, but in my opinion it is just too long & the beat feels uninspired to me. I think it`s a play on Goodie Mob`s "They Don`t Dance No Mo`" except they flip it; "Niggas don`t fight no mo` all they do is this"... which is followed up by guns being cocked & fired. It was kind of entertaining for the first 2 minutes or so but about 4 & a quarter minutes of it gets a little boring to me. "What You Need?" features E`s homies the Live Squad, the beginning of the track has somewhat of an interlude where they snatch up some kat & eventually kill him, well you don`t really hear that but you do hear a gun cocked so you can only guess that dude gets shot, then the song starts. One thing that you`ll notice is the chemistry that E has with Live Squad. Anyway the beat`s got a mellow vibe to it, while each emcee takes turns spitting some street tough talking business. The song`s not super spectacular, but it`s definitely not wack either...


"Want It" features both Nas & Horse, even though Horse is uncredited he`s the one spitting the second verse on this track. This song also has a mellow`D out vibe to it, but even though it`s soft & relaxing in sound it still holds its street character. Of course Nas outshines all that are featured on the track, but Moneybags still manages to hold his own. "How Cool" features Nature & sounds like it could have been done for one of those late `90's mixtapes. Both kats take turns trading braggadocio rhymes & the end result is a decent effort. "Thugged Out" features Noreaga & a few members of his crew; Maze, Musolini & Diesel who for some reason are just credited as Thugged Out. This joint was probably done for some DJ Clue mixtape seeing as how they give him some shout outs on here. Like the previously mentioned Nature collabo` "Thugged Out" is another decent listen. "Friend Of Ours" is a collabo` that features the legendary Kool G. Rap as well as Nature. Unfortunately the sound quality of this song isn`t that great because this joint is a banger! The beat has a nice killer Soul sample that some may recognize (think Mood`s "Karma"). Hopefully I can eventually track down a better sounding version of this track someday. G. Rap steals the show on this one, my opinion of course -- even if he did later recycle his verse from this track for "3 To The Dome" on Sway & King Tech`s "This Or That" album...

 
The "Esco Intro" is simply just the last few seconds of Noreaga`s "Da Story" & serves basically as a shout out to E Moneybags from Nas. The album closes out with "Thugs Calm Down" featuring Nas & Noreaga, a great tune without question. I just love that beat, the piano loop is catchy as fuck! This version is the original from what I can tell, but I know some of y`all probably heard the other version of this track that is out there that features Tragedy Khadafi instead of E Money Bags. The story behind the 2 different versions is that Tragedy took E`s verse off the track because he felt that it was wack, you can peep a little article about that story here. So there you have it, do I think that this album`s a 5 mic masterpiece? No, but it does give us a glimpse at the potential that E Moneybags possessed. He wasn`t the best rapper, but he did have his moments. I think that this kat was more concerned with his street hustlin` than he was with his rappin` hustle though, which is kind of a shame because he may still be alive had he chose to spend more time in the booth & less time hangin` out in them streets. Then again ya never know, look at what happened to Biggie. Anyway you should probably give this joint a listen if you`re a fan of that late `90's New York sound, enjoy...

Today I`m gon` share with y`all the promo CD single for Capone-N-Noreaga`s "T.O.N.Y. (Top Of New York)". This is actually the very first track that I heard from the duo, it`s also my favorite joint from them. It dropped back in 1997 & was released by Penalty Recordings. Carlos Broady & Nashiem Myrick produced the beat while Tragedy Khadafi has a guest appearance. For those that don`t know this joint`s from Capone-N-Noreaga`s CLaSSiC debut album titled "The War Report". On this single you get 4 tracks in total; the Radio Version, the LP Version, the Instrumental & finally the Acappella (unfortunately it`s an edited version). Do yourself a favor & check out this great tune, you`ll be glad that you did...

Got another lil` gem for y`all today, it comes in the form of an unofficial/ bootleg 12 inch. It contains 4 tracks in total; "Alluminati" a track from Tragedy Khadafi, "Norematti" a Noreaga joint & then the 2 Instrumentals are included. Funny thing is that both tracks share the same beat. From what I`ve been told Tragedy had recorded the "Alluminati" track first & then later on Noreaga used the same beat for "Norematti"...

So was that snake~like move by Noreaga fuel for the fire that was the beef between Tragedy Khadafi & C-N-N? Who knows, I really have no idea why these kats had friction maybe it was money? Got another lil` gem for y`all to check out courtesy of Cipha Sounds, so first off BiG uPs to him! He originally posted it up on his blog back in 2008. The link`s been long dead, so fortunately for you I have uploaded it again. This time around however I have taken a lil` time to edit, separate & tag the tracks to make it a lil` easier to listen to. Don`t worry I have also included both original files, sides A & B as they were -- one long mp3 for each side. So what is it? I know you`re askin`! Well just check out what Cipha Sounds had to say about it with his blog post;

I finally dug it out of the basement for all of you…
This mixtape I did in `98 is by far the item I am most asked about.
It was basically the album sampler of Nore’s first solo album N.O.R.E.
(niggas on the run eatin) before it came out. This was the era of Big Pun,
LOX, Cam’Ron, DMX, and all other Tunnel Bangers*. Nore pretty much had some
kind of feature or guest appearance with all of them and more. Man, I miss
this era in new york. This was the best summer with banging joints on the
radio. My boy Mayhem that worked at Penalty records at the time had an idea
to do more than just put snippets on a cassette for the sampler. He thought
of mixing all the hot joints featuring Nore together to make it crazy. This
shit blew up in the streets. I was never a big mixtape dude but this
definitely got bootlegged in the streets heavy. No CD’s were pressed from the
label, but all the bootleggers on 125th Street and Jamaica Ave. had them on CD…

So the "Ya Heard! Vol. 1 Penalty Mixtape" is pretty much a Noreaga mixtape except for the last 3 tracks on Side B, they`re from artists that were signed to Penalty Records at the time. Side A is hosted by Funkmaster Flex & is mixed by Cipha Sounds, while Side B isn`t mixed by Cipha or hosted by Flex at all. I`m not sure why they didn`t just keep it goin` thru~out the entire tape, it would`ve made it that much iLLeR -- just my opinion of course. A couple things to note that make this tape worth listening to: 

1) The original version of "L.A., L.A." is on here, you know the one that has that beat that`s similar to the Dogg Pound`s "New York, New York"...

2) Although it`s only a snippet, the original version of "I Love My Life" with Nas on the hook is also on here. The version that made it to Noreaga`s debut solo album "N.O.R.E." has Carl Thomas replacing Nas...
