MeTHoD MaN`s "TiCaL [HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

What`s up y`all? I know, I know it`s been a long while since I`ve actually posted something up on the blog, but you got to bare with me & understand that since I`m a full-time father now I don`t have as much free time as I used to (or would love to have!). Even though the number of posts may be down a lil` bit I promise that I will do my best to ensure that when I do post something that it`ll be well worth the wait. So today I have another album to share with y`all that gets the HeRBaN DeLuXe treatment. The album that I decided to touch this time around is Method Man`s 1994 debut solo album titled "Tical". Now I`m sure that most of you have at least heard the album if not own the original release. The reason that I choose to do this album is pretty simple really, Def Jam recently released the 20th Anniversary 'Deluxe Edition' (I think it dropped in September) & I wasn`t really all that impressed with the extra joints that they decided to add to it...

They pretty much just added the entire "All I Need" CD single, 2 remixes of "Release Yo` Delf" (Prodigy Remix & the New Blood Mix), 2 remixes of "Bring The Pain" (Chemical Brothers Remix & the actual remix) & it`s instrumental, "The Riddler" & the Capleton collabo` "Wings Of The Morning [Dynamik Duo Mix]". Some of the tracks aren`t bad, but overall I just found it to be a real lazily put together 20th Anniversary release. I`m not saying that my selection of tracks is the greatest either, but it`s definitely much better than their version. I tried to keep it to songs that were released around the same time period as his debut album, but wanted to keep it to a one disc compilation. I could`ve easily made it a double disc comp`, but decided against doing so. Who knows maybe later on down the line I`ll put a second disc together to accompany this one, but for now it is what it is...

 Now let`s get to the music shall we? The album starts off with "Tical" a nice dark & dusty way to kick things off. "Biscuits" is a short 2 verse joint with a good thumpin` beat behind it that compliments Meth`s flows. I always laugh when I hear that lil` interlude that he kicks at the beginning of the track:

"Yo` mama don`t wear no drawers,

I saw her when she took them off!

Standin` on the welfare line eatin` swine

Tryin` to look fine with her stank behind

You can ask the bitch & she`ll tell ya fast

Meth-Tical got style with his nasty ass"...

"Bring The Pain" may have been played a whole lot since it was first released, but I don`t care it`s still a banger to me! I remember when it first dropped back in the day, I had taped the song off the radio from a local college Hip Hop show (can`t remember the exact show it`s been a few years) & was playin` the fuck out of the tape (in my walkman, yeah it was that long ago....LoL). As soon as you hear the first few notes of the beat at the beginning of the track you just know that it`s gon` be something awesome! This song was released as one of the album`s singles with "P.L.O. Style" on the B-side. "All I Need" is next & although it isn`t the Mary J. Blige featured remix version that helped Meth` win a Grammy it`s still a nice track. Meth` basically kicks verses for his girl letting her know how he feels for her, a ghetto love song if you will. Rumor has it that Def Jam actually had to bribe Method Man with a Cadillac or some ish just so he`d do the remixes for this song because they wanted something that was a lil` more radio airplay friendly since the album doesn`t really have any commercialized sounding joints. Not sure exactly how true it is, but regardless I glad that he decided to do the remix with Mary `cuz it`s a banger. The music video was pretty entertaining too...

"What The Blood Clot" is a quick & short one verse track, Meth` also chooses this song to give shout outs to all the homies. "Meth vs. Chef" is another one of my favorite songs on this album, hearing it 20 years later it still sounds great. The only thing that kind of sucks is that Raekwon sort of gives up about half way thru his verse....LoL, always thought it would have been a DoPe idea if the Wu had more battle type joints between other members of the Clan on later solo members` albums to keep the competitiveness going & keep `em lyrically sharp & on point. "Sub Crazy" is another short lil` dusty track that has Meth` flippin` straight lyrics. It`s not a track that I`m really much of a fan of, it`s not wack but is far from the banger that the song before it is. The Blue Raspberry collabo` "Released Yo` Delf" definitely picks things back up! Right from the opening lines of Blue`s lyrics you just know that this song`s gon` get you pumped up especially after the beat kicks in. This song`s another one of my faves no doubt about it!!!

"P.L.O. Style" follows & is a short lil` collabo` with Carlton Fisk (I`m not really too familiar with this kat), it`s a decent back & forth song though. "I Get My Thang In Action" is next & is backed by a nice head noddin` beat, Meth` kicks rhymes just showin` you that he can flex his style with ease. "Mr.Sandman" is a nice dark & dusty posse cut collabo` that features Carlton Fisk, Inspectah Deck, RZA, Street Thug (they probably mean Street Life but it`s listed as Thug instead) & Blue Raspberry. Something interesting to note, this is the first posse cut that`s not on an actual Wu-Tang Clan group album. "Stimulation" features Blue Raspberry once again handling the hook for the track, overall it`s nothing super spectacular but it`s still better than "Sub Crazy". Although I prefer the original version that`s featured on the Wu-Tang Clan`s debut album the "Method Man [Rmx]" isn`t too shabby either...

That remix is where the original album would`ve ended, but like I said at the beginning of this post I decided to make this version somewhat of a 'deluxe' compilation to celebrate the album`s 20th birthday if you will. So without any more of a delay let`s get to the bonus content shall we? The first joint that I chose to add was the "Bring The Pain [Rmx]" which was originally featured on the re-released album that Def Jam put out back in 2000 as part of their Def Jam Remasters series. It`s nothing super spectacular, the beat is slightly different but the lyrics are still the same as the original version. Not everyone has heard this version so that is why I decided to add it. Following that is the demo version of "All I Need" which is a pretty rare joint in my books. So BiG uPs goes out to the homie dirt_dog for hookin` me up with this & a lot of the other joints that I used to complete this compilation! The beat is the same as the album version, but what is different with this joint is that it has a lil` interlude that features a couple of chicks (not sure who they are) talkin` to each other about men. They are also featured on the hook, well where the hook would be, talkin` & gossiping about men as well (it`s kind of entertaining to hear)...

The next joint is the Frankenstein remix of "P.L.O. Style" which is originally from the Frankenstein "Live From New York (The Remixx Album)" promo that was released back in 1996. I posted that joint up a while back, you can peep it here. One thing that I should mention is that I cut the track a lil` short because the end of the song was just the instrumental looped & I wanted to leave room for more songs on this comp` so that`s why I faded it out early. "No Hook" is off of Shaquille O`Neal`s album titled "Shaq-Fu: Da Return" & features the RZA as well. The "Wu Headbangers Freestyle" is a DoPe freestyle that was originally featured on the "P.L.O. Style" 12 inch single that was released back in 1997. "Freestyle Lyricstyle" is another freestyle joint that was originally released on a promo 12 inch single in 1997. The "Funkmaster Flex `95 Freestyle" that also features Redman was originally released on Funkmaster Flex`s "60 Minutes Of Funk Vol. 1 Mixtape" that dropped in 1995...

"The Riddler" is a joint that Meth` did for the "Batman Forever Soundtrack", the "Hide Out Rmx" (which isn`t as widely heard as the original version) was originally released on a 12 inch (or CD) single from 1995. The "Evil Streets [Rmx]" is an iLL collabo` with Onyx that was originally released back in 1995 on a 12 inch promo single. The original version of "The What" featuring the late & great Biggie wasn`t officially released, but most of y`all probably heard it off that "Notorious B.I.G - Ready To Die [O.G. Version]" that was circulating on the web a few years ago. What`s interesting about this version is that it has different lyrics than the version that appears on B.I.G.`s debut album, so it`s definitely worth checking out! Things close out with "Hard To Kill", a collabo` with Spice 1. This West Coast/ East Coast pairing was originally released back in 1994 on Spice 1`s "AmeriKKKa`s Nightmare" album. So there ya have it y`all, another reason to check out Method Man`s debut album & appreciate it. Enjoy the bonus tunes, happy listening...

CaNiBuS` "CaN-I-BuS [HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

Today I`m hittin` y`all off with another HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN, this time around I`ve decided to dust off the debut album from Canibus which dropped back in 1998 titled "Can-I-Bus". I know some of y`all are asking why? Especially after he straight up embarrassed himself by trying to battle Dizaster at KOTD, that`s alright though. Honestly I will admit to being really disappointed when this album dropped & I copped it. I mean after hearing Canibus rippin` the mixtape scene & pretty much every guest appearance that he had in 1997 I was kind of expecting some of that raw Hip Hop to show up on his debut, but upon my first listen I didn`t really hear it. The main problem with the album is that the production is kind of weak. I believe that Wyclef had just a lil` too much input on this album, from the beats he supplied to the directions that he decided to take the album. Sure Canibus has some co-production credit on the album, but it`s only on 4 of the 13 tracks (14 if you got the UK release). Both Wyclef & Jerry Wonder just really couldn`t provide the right backdrops to truly complement Canibus` lyrical style & I think that`s probably why a lot of folks dismiss this album as complete & utter shit...

Fifteen years after it`s release I decided to go back to it & give it another listen, this time with a little more of an open mind. Once you get passed the fact that the production is far from grade A the album really isn`t all that bad of a listen. Sure there are some weak moments, but overall "Can-I-Bus" still sounds better than a lot of the music that is being released now~a~days.....LoL, it`s truly Canibus` lyrics that save the album of course. Let`s get into the album now shall we? The Intro is a lil` on the lame side with `Bis hackin` a computer deleting government files....LoL, luckily it`s only about 70 seconds long. The first actual song on the album "Patriots" is a collabo` with female emcee Free while Fugee member Pras handling the hook duty. Honestly I think that Free outshines `Bis on this song dropping lines like; 

..."Specimen with extraterrestrial estrogen

Kick your intestines in, sell your testicles to Mexicans"...

 

After hearing Free`s verse it makes me ask the question, why didn`t she ever release a solo album? "Get Retarded" was a song that got a lot of play on the college Hip Hop radio shows back in `98. The Salaam Remi produced beat with the Roxanne Shante sample on the hook made it easy for Canibus to flex his lyrics. "Niggonometry" has a nice lil` funky vibe to it with a hook that`s scratched, Jerry Wonder didn`t do too bad with this one. The song itself is kind of like A Tribe Called Quest`s "What" except Canibus flips it more on the mathematical tip. Towards the end of the song there`s even a lil` swipe at LL Cool J. A sample of some guy says, "Hey I been sittin` here trying to think of what we can do with this here letter L..." Then they scratch in "F-U-C-K" & then the letter L follows & is echoed so it sounds like LL.....LoL, guess that was their way of easing the listeners into the LL Cool J DiSS track "2nd Round K.O." featuring former boxer Mike Tyson...

"2nd Round K.O." is probably the album`s best track, not because of the whole LL DiSS but more so because it`s a song that actually allows that battle hungry/ underground emcee to show his true colors over a beat that`s also one of the album`s better moments production~wise. "What`s Going On?" is an anti gun anthem that has `Bis askin` the knuckle~heads to leave the firearms at home when headin` out for the night. A song that speaks for most of the fans of Hip Hop, you know the ones that aren`t packin` heat but beats instead. Wyclef then decides to follow things up with "I Honor U", one of the album`s weaker moments. I say Wyclef because you can just tell that this joint is all his idea; from it`s lame uninspiring beat to it`s R&B styled hook. You can see that he was attempting to go for radio play with this one, talking about failed relationships from the female`s side of things -- the only problem is that the attempt isn`t all that well executed...

The hippy~vibed "Hype-Nitis" is an ode to Biz Markie`s CLaSSiC song "Vapors" that features Jenny Fujita singing the hook. "How We Roll" has Canibus rippin` his lyrics over a boom~bapp`N beat produced by Clark Kent while Panama P.I. takes on the duty of handling the hook. "Channel Zero" features an uncredited appearance from Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz who can be heard delivering the song`s hook while Canibus spits UFO conspiracy influenced flows over another Clark Kent production. "Let`s Ride" is another one of the album`s weaker tracks, although the beat is pretty lame Canibus still manages to rap well over it. "Buckingham Palace" has Canibus delivering some quality lyrics over a moody~vibed beat, sure the hook`s a lil` simplistic but aside from that this joint is definitely a good listen. "Rip Rock" comes off as a lame attempt at sounding like Run DMC with it`s Rock-n-Roll influenced beat produced by Jerry Wonder, while `Bis sounds a lil` awkward flowin` over the instrumental. This is where the album would end if you had the US or Canadian versions, but if you got your hands on the UK release there`s actually a bonus track on there. The extra song in question is titled "How Come?" & it features Youssou N`Dour & Wyclef, it was originally featured as the third song on the "Bulworth Soundtrack"...

So that`s my thoughts on the original incarnation of the album, now let`s get to the 'bonus cuts' that I decided to add on to the album to give it a lil` extended play. The first song is the "Black Out Remix" of Yvette Michele`s joint "DJ Keep Playin`" featuring both Canibus & Black Rob. I`ve always dug that Yvette Michele song & how can ya go wrong with `Bis & Rob as features? It`s off a 12 inch single if you`re curious. "Group Home Family" was originally featured on the soundtrack to the 1997 film "Sprung", it`s a collabo` joint between Canibus, Panama P.I. & Mr. Cheeks. "Uni-4-Orm" is another collabo` that features Ras Kass, Canibus & Heltah Skeltah that was originally on the soundtrack to the 1996 Hip Hop documentary "Rhyme & Reason". "Seriously" is a Funkmaster Flex produced track that`s from the Flip Squad Allstar DJ`s album released back in 1998 featuring Boe & Villa, two kats who I have never heard of. The "4-3-2-1 Rmx" is off an LL Cool J 12 inch single for that song, figured that I would include the song that started the whole beef between `Bis & LL. I decided to follow that joint up with the original verse that Canibus spit for "4-3-2-1", just wish I had the entire song without any DJ adlibs. The last track on here is a live extended version of "2nd Round K.O." that Canibus performed while he was on Kiss FM London back in 1998. Gotta BiG~uP DJ Step One for that joint, much appreciated homie! Don`t wait any longer, go `head & give the album another listen you may just enjoy it this time around...

Here`s a lil` mix that I put together just before the New Year, it`s got the usual mix of both older & new tracks. I started things off with some Redman & some tracks that featured him as well, then moved it on with some Eminem & some tracks that he was a guest on. "The Warning" is a humorous DiSS track aimed at Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon both. Thought it was MaD funny how Em` used samples of Mariah`s voice from a so~called studio session that they had together....now that`s some dirty play`N! "Oh Really?" is just one of the DoPe tracks off that joint album by KRS-One & Buckshot (if ya haven`t heard their "Survival Skills" album yet I strongly suggest that you do!) "Wack MC`s" follows, thought it was a good choice since it features a nice lil` KRS-One sample for the hook -- Slaughterhouse rips up the track nicely as well...

Still on the Slaughterhouse tip, I decided to add solo tracks from each member to the mix CD. Started things off with Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, then Royce Da 5`9. Royce`s "Part Of Me" features some great storytelling, I`m tellin` you Slick Rick would be proud. "Bang-Bang"; a surprising collabo` between La Coka Nostra & Snoop is followed by "100 Miles & Runnin`" another East & West Coast collabo` featuring Warren G, Raekwon & the king of hooks Nate Dogg. The "Renaissance Rap [Rmx]" is one of my favorite joints on this mix. Q-Tip rounds up Busta Rhymes, Raekwon & Lil` Wayne for what seems like an updated version of the Juice Crew`s CLaSSiC track "The Symphony". I don`t really think that Marley Marl would complain at all since all 4 emcees rock the mic...

"Speed Of Light" & "Hood Dreamer" follow -- both are hot tracks, but I really want to talk about the last 2 joints on this mix. "Eat A Dick" is a previously unreleased track of Snoop Dogg`s, but thanks to the folks over at WIDEawake Entertainment we actually got to hear it. It`s a track from "The Death Row: The Lost Sessions, Vol. 1" album that they released back in October of last year. If you haven`t heard it yet & you`re a BiG fan of Snoop`s then you need to hear it! "Slaves" is the last track on this mix & it`s a joint by Sam Sneed. One of my friends told me that it`s a new joint, but I really have no idea. Hopefully it is because I`d like to hear some more music from Sam Sneed, especially since he didn`t really get to drop too much music while he was workin` with Death Row Records. Anyways that`s enough yapp`N for now, hope y`all enjoy the mix...

DMX`s "GeT At Me DoG" [TaPe SaMPLeR]...

What`s good y`all? Hope Life`s been treatin` ya well. Myself? I`ve been workin` like a mad man the passed few weeks so I haven`t had enough time for the blog as of late. Fortunately for me though, I had today off so I figured that I`d take some time to post up a lil` something for y`all. So what I have to share with y`all is DMX`s "Get At Me Dog" [Tape Sampler], it was released back in 1998 & was used as promo to keep the buzz goin` for X`s debut album "It`s Dark & Hell Is Hot"...

What ya get on this Tape Sampler is basically all of the tracks (snippets unfortunately) that featured DMX from 1997-98, when X was at his hungriest straight eatin` the competition. There`s a few DJ intros/ interludes, some DMX freestyles & even a few snippets of some cuts off his "Get At Me Dog" single. There`s 20 tracks in all, Side 1 is exactly the same as Side 2 & the entire mix is just over 24 minutes long. I spent a lil` time adjusting the volume on the tape & also separated the tracks into individual mp3`s, don`t worry I`ve also included the original rips of Side 1 & 2 in their 24-plus minute mp3 format. Got a DoPe lil` mixtape from DJ Scratch, it`s kind of like a "best of" or "greatest hits" of EPMD joints & it was released back in 2006. It`s definitely worth a listen, I mean you got a whole lot of EPMD gems here -- even a demo version of "Rampage" (it`s the last track). Re-uPP`d, originally posted on 01.11.2012...

The other day while gem searchin` I came across this single (far from a gem, but whatever....LoL) up in a pawn shop for a good ol` $1.50 so I decided to grab it since I didn`t have it in my collection yet & now I`m sharing it with y`all. It`s nothin` really super spectacular, what ya get is a deep emotional track ("Father") that`s from LL`s 1997 album "Phenomenon", it`s instrumental & then the single closes out with the "4, 3, 2, 1 [E-Dub Rmx]" (sadly it`s the Radio Edit) that features Method Man, Redman, DMX, Canibus & Master P...

Obviously the "4, 3, 2, 1 [E-Dub Rmx]" is the joint for me on this one, even if it is a Radio Edit. "Father" is a decent song, but in all honesty I always found it kind of funny that it was chosen for a single. There were other joints that were far more 'radio friendly' than "Father". I mean when you look at the content of the "Phenomenon" album you can see that at least 95% of it was geared towards the ladies, so who knows maybe LL wanted to go for somethin` different by selectin` this emotional track for a single. Either way give the single a listen, enjoy...

ReDMaN & MeTHoD MaN in "HoW HiGH"...

What`s up y`all? Hope all is good with ya, today I have a lil` movie for y`all enjoyment. This Comedy joint is from 2001 & stars Redman & Method Man, that`s right you guessed it....the movie that I`m sharing with y`all today is titled "How High". I seen this flick in the theater with my homie Abe back when it was first released. It`s a decent joint, definitely a movie ya smoke to......LoL, you`ll see a few familiar faces in the cast of this  flick. You have Mike Epps (think Day-Day from "Next Friday"), Lark Voorhies (think Lisa from the "Saved By The Bell" TV show), Essence Atkins (think Tasha from the "Smart Guy" TV series) & even Cypress Hill make a lil` cameo appearance...

Now for those that don`t know what the movie`s about I will give ya a lil` summary without any spoilers. The film`s two main characters Silas P. Silas (played by Method Man) & Jamal King (played by Redman) lose their good friend Ivory in a crazy Weed~related dreadlock fire accident. In a sentimental move they decide to grow some Marijuana in Ivory`s ashes, the outcome`s pretty funny. The spirit of their deceased friend comes back whenever they smoke the Weed that they grew in his ashes. So they end up using this spiritual connection to help get them both into Harvard. Once they arrive both Jamal & Silas flip the Ivy Leaguer`s lives upside down in a way only true Buddah smokers could do. So go on, check out the flick for some laughs you won`t be disappointed...
