I`ve always been an huge fan of Ricky Walters a.k.a. Slick Rick ever since I first heard "Children`s Story" back in `89! Even as a young buck I thought he had some iLL storytelling abilities. That`s definitely something that I think helps keep an emcee entertaining & gives `em more replay value. Just peep tracks like the previously mentioned "Children`s Story", "Indian Girl", "Behind Bars" or even "Adults Only" -- very entertaining indeed....LoL, anyways I was bored a few days ago & decided that I`d put together a lil` mix of some rare & unreleased Slick Rick joints as well as a few of my fav` Ricky D tracks. So here`s what I came up with, nothing special but definitely worth a listen if you`re a BiG Slick rick fan. Gotta BiG~uP Roy Johnson from the Bust The Facts Crew for a whole lot of the unreleased tracks & the folks from over at TiMe 4 SuM AKSioN for a few of the rare 12" joints as well, thanks a lot fellas truly appreciated...

Finally got around to Re~uPP`n this bootleg 12 inch by Slick Rick titled "The Ruler`s Remixes", so for those of you that were asking me to repost it this one`s for you! This joint was released in 2002 by Archives Inc. & it features 7 tracks in total (there`s 4 songs & 3 Instrumentals). This is definitely one for those that DiG the instrumentals. The only downside that I find with this 12 inch is the fact that "Get Bizzy" featuring Greyson & Jaysun (Greysun is misspelled on the record`s sticker label) is the edited version. Aside from that though it`s a pretty DoPe lil` bootleg, so go `head & give it a listen...

Had to re-up this joint because there had been a whole lot of folks requesting it, so this post is for y`all hope you enjoy & appreciate it. Anyways for those of you that aren`t familiar with this bootleg it`s another unofficial Slick Rick release similar to the "Ricky D EP", actually most of the tracks from that EP are also on this bootleg, imagine that. It was released back in 2008 in the UK & contains some rare & unreleased material. The sound quality of some of these joints isn`t the greatest, but that is probably because they came from someone`s basement tapes or maybe they were just poorly mixed from the get~go. Who really knows for sure? There`s not a whole lot of info` out there regarding this release. Sound quality aside, I will say that this is definitely a must~hear for any Slick Rick fans out there. Standout joints for me are; "Can`t Shake Us [Kenny Dope Mix]", "Women Lose Weight [Alchemist Rmx]", Sleazy Gynacologist", "Trouble [J-Love Rmx]", "It`s A Boy [Large Pro Rmx]" & finally the last track the 1984 "Practice Over At Chill Will`s Crib" for it`s rarity, givin` us a glimpse at some early Ricky D. So go `head & check it out for ya`self...

I first posted up this Slick Rick joint up over 3 years ago with not much info`. Some time has passed, but I did learn a lil` more about it so with that being said I`ll shall share with y`all the very little info` gained. Spoiler, just as I suspected the "Ricky D EP" is a bootleg released in 2002 on vinyl thru Archives Inc.. I`m still unsure of the production credits for this, but the obvious one is clearly that the last track "World Renown" was produced by Pete Rock. Anyway that`s all I have for y`all, enjoy the tunes. My favorite joint on here is "Get A Job"...

"TouGHeR THaN LeaTHeR" [MoViE]...

What`s up y`all? Today I`m gon` share with y`all somewhat of a hidden gem, it comes in the form of a film from 1988 titled "Tougher Than Leather". It stars Run DMC, Russell Simmons & Rick Rubin, but also has lil` cameos from the Beastie Boys & even Slick Rick. It`s not the iLLeST written movie & probably falls into the B-Movie category, but for a fan of Hip Hop it`s definitely worth at least one viewing. A quick summary of this flick goes a lil` somethin` like this; Run DMC gets signed to a record label run by Vic Ferrante (played by Rick Rubin). Vic`s label`s actually a front, he`s using it to launder his father`s dirty money. Obviously with a label like that some grimy ish was happening behind the scenes & unfortunately for Runny Ray (one of Run DMC`s homies) he happens to see Vic & his boys killing someone so he ends up gettin` murked as well. Run DMC finds out about their boy being murdered & that sends `em on a mission to track down his killer. I kept the summary pretty basic so I didn`t ruin the movie for ya......LoL, just so ya know it`s in .flv file format which isn`t the best quality I know, but that`s the format I had so it is what it is. You can view it using the VLC Player without an issue...

My favorite cut on here is "Sittin` In My Car [Def Mix]", the remix that has Jermaine Dupri`s touch. Kind of glad that they decided to include the Instrumental (for the Def Mix) because it`s the better beat of the 3 versions on this 12 inch. For those wondering, Slick Rick`s ol` school homie Doug E. Fresh supplies the beatbox on all 3 versions of "Sittin` In My Car". So there ya have it, go on & check it out for ya`self...

SLiCK RiCK`s "The ArT Of SToRy TeLLiNG [ADVaNCe]"...

"Now here`s a lil` somethin` that needs to be heard"...

Honestly y`all I didn`t know about this version of Slick Rick`s "The Art Of Story Telling" until I heard my homie MaRSuPiaL BuMP`n it at his crib the other day. So being the BiG Slick Rick fan that I am I borrowed it to copy...& well, share it with y`all folks that are curious enough to want to listen. I`m guessing it`s what the album was going to be, but for whatever reasons there were slight changes made at the last moment before it was released. Anyway, I`ll just mention the differences that I`ve noticed after a listen...







Right away you`ll notice that the first track "Jail Skit" doesn`t feature Redman like the retail`s version, but instead features Nas & there`s also someone else who I can`t put my finger on at the moment, but he`s after Rev. Run & just before Nas (school me y`all). Track 6, the "Bugsy Radio [Skit]" is a lil` different as well. If you listen closely the background music is the beginning of "Unify", that`s not the case on the retail. Track 12 features Q-Tip & Wyclef unlike the retail`s version that has Q-Tip & Peter Gunz. You`ll also notice that the track "Fresh" featuring J.D. (originally released on J.D`s 1998 album "Life In 1472") is included...







Then there`s the "Rick & Wyclef [Skit]" that appears just before "Memories". Wyclef welcomes Slick Rick home (from jail) & asks Rick to drop that "Memories" joint & tells folks not to bootleg Rick`s music....LoL, "Unify" with Snoop Dogg sounds more like a freestyled version of the track that`s on the retail release. Track 21 "I Sparkle" doesn`t appear on the retail version, I believe that the track was release on a 12" though. The version of "I Own America Part 2" is also a lil` bit different than the retail version, this one has a woman signing all thru the track. Gotta say that I prefer the one that`s on the retail album. The only other difference between the Advance & the Retail is that the Advance version doesn`t have the "CEO Outro" & the retail bonus tracks; "We Turn It On", "La Di Da Di [Live]" or "The Show [Live]". So there y`all have it, now check it out & enjoy...
