213`s "GRouPie LuV (G-FuNK ReMiXeS) [CD SiNGLe]"...

Back again with another 213 single, this one`s a lil` more interesting than the previous "Groupie Luv" single that I shared with y`all. True this is another "Groupie Luv" single, but this one includes some G-Funk remixes that were produced by the 'G-Child' Warren G. He actually did 2 G-Funk remixes on this single; the G-Funk Club Remix & then the G-Funk Grown Folks Remix, I`m DiGG`n the latter of the 2 personally. Don`t get me wrong the Club Remix isn`t bad I just feel that the beat would`ve been better suited for another song altogether, this is just my opinion though. Now the Grown Folks Remix is bangin`, it may be almost better than the original. I definitely think that someone should jack that Instrumental for a mixtape that`s for sure!!! 


On this single you get 7 tracks in total; the Album version, Album Instrumental, G-Funk Club Remix, G-Funk Club Remix Instrumental, G-Funk Grown Folks Remix, G-Funk Grown Folks Remix Instrumental & the Acappella. Something that`s kind of funny to note that I noticed with all 3 of the 213 singles that I`ve shared with y`all is that each one of them had a different spelling for acapella. So I decided that I`d get to the bottom of it since I have always wondered what the correct spelling of the word actually was, so according to this site here`s what they had to say about it;

"In referring to singing unaccompanied by instruments, the traditional spelling is the Italian one, a cappella: two words, two Ps, two Ls. The Latin spelling a capella is learned, but in the realm of musical terminology, we usually stick with Italian. The one-word spelling “acapella” is widely used by Americans, including by some performing groups, but this is generally regarded by musical experts as an error"...

So apparently I have been using the American variation all this time...LoL, but usually when it comes to tracklists I just copy it however it appears on the album, single or whatever. Anyway, now that I`ve just taken you to school go `head & take recess & listen to these tunes, enjoy...

Going to share with y`all another promo single from 213, this one`s a CD Single that also came out in 2004 thru TVT Records. It`s titled "Groupie Luv" & it was produced by DJ Pooh who sampled Herbie Hancock`s "Chameleon" for the beat. Overall it`s a funky entertaining joint, I mean c`mon who doesn`t like groupies?.....LoL, this is clearly not a super lyrical track, but if you`re lookin` to get the crowd up dancin` I`m sure this joint`ll help you out with that. You get 5 tracks on this single; the Radio version, Dirty version, Instrumental, Accapella & the Call Out Hook. Never truly understood why some singles include that Call Out Hook ish, but for whatever reason it`s on here too. 213 did a music video for this song, it`s got a somewhat corny but comical vibe to it. That`s all that I really have to say about this joint, check out the tunes & enjoy...

213`s "ANoTHeR SuMMeR [PRoMo 12 iNCH]"...

My apologies to the visitors of this blog, I realize that it`s been almost 2 months since I`ve posted any music I just needed to take a lil` break. Hopefully I can start posting up somethings before I head up to Canada for a few days to visit my parents, brothers & friends. I`m kind of excited to take the trip it`s been almost a year since my last visit & this time around I`m going with my wife & son. Anyway I`m going to kick things back into motion with a TVT Records released Promo 12 Inch single that was originally released in 2004 by the West Coast super trio 213. Now if you are not familiar with who 213 is you should have your West Coast pass revoked.....LoL, I`m jokin` y`all. 213 is a trio of West Coast rappers consisting of Snoop Dogg, 'Mr. Regulate' Warren G & the late great Nate Dogg who all rep` Long Beach, California. The group`s name 213 stood for the area code of Long Beach at the time they formed (the area code has since been switched to 526). That`s all I`m really going to say about `em for now, I don`t want to get into great detail because I want to save that story for when I share with y`all their one & only album...

With that being said, the title of this single is "Another Summer" which is quite fitting seeing as how this Summer is pretty much winding down & honestly I can`t say that I`m sad about that....LoL, now being a Canadian I never thought I`d be so glad to be done with Summer, but ever since I moved down to Charlotte, North Carolina it`s another story altogether. So far I`ve been here for 2 Summers & they`ve been hella hot! The first one wasn`t quite as bad because it rained a whole lot, like 3 out of every 7 days that went by it rained. This Summer however it`s been CRaZy hot!!! Severe drought like weather, not as bad as what Cali`s been dealing with though thank God, but still very much hot with a lot less rain. I mean when you`re standing in the shade & it still feels as though you`re melting like ice cream it`s just simply too hot for comfort & definitely not enjoyable at all. Who knows though, maybe I just haven`t adapted to the climate yet...

Anyway, this promo single contains 3 tracks in total; the Clean/Radio version, the Instrumental & the Acapella. The song`s produced by none other than Kanye West who samples Eddie Kendricks` "Intimate Friends" for the beat. Latoiya Williams is also featured on the track & delivers some sweet soundin` vocals. It`s a decent song, not super spectacular but also far from wack. I can definitely see it getting some play at a few family BBQ`s since it has that nice laid back Summer time vibe to it. What`s also great about this single is that you get the Acapella which gives you another way to enjoy Nate Dogg`s vocals. Without the beat you truly get to hear just how talented of a singer he was, I`m sure it`s that way for just about any of his Acapellas though. So there ya have it, check out the music & enjoy...

TaPeMaSTeRS iNc. & KeYZ PReSeNT - "2PaC: Runnin` WiTH An OuTLaW"...

Since I didn`t have any cassette rips to share for the Tuesday Tape Rip series this week I figured that I could at the very least share with y`all this mixtape that I`ve been listening to for the last few days. Lately there`s been quite a few 2Pac news articles being published on the various Hip Hop news sites, so naturally I`ve been checkin` `em out. I can only guess that all the media attention given to `Pac was due to the fact that his birthday had just passed on June 16th. Anyway, all that reading that I was doing also led to me dustin` off this mixtape presented by Tapemasters Inc. & Keyz titled "2Pac: Runnin` With An Outlaw" which they released back in 2005, it`s a pretty solid effort overall. They definitely made some great selections when it came to the songs that they picked for this mixtape. Since it was the 12th edition of their Collabo series Tapemasters Inc. & Keyz decided to choose some of 2Pac`s better collaborations although some of them were created after his death like "Loyal To The Game" with 50 Cent & G-Unit or "N.I.G.G.A." with Jadakiss for example...

The only downside (it`s only minor) about this joint is that they chose to use the edited version of the `Pac & Scarface collabo` "Smile". Aside from that though this joint is almost a 5 star effort. I think had they used the original versions of "Loyal To The Game", "Runnin`", "One Day At A Time" & "Military Minds" then this mixtape would`ve been gold star sticker worthy....LoL, my opinion of course. I`ve never been a super huge fan of `Pac like say my cousin Dawson is, but I definitely am a fan of the man`s work! He had some great charisma on the mic & when he spit his lyrics you definitely felt them. Whether he was spittin` DiSSeS, some political ish or even some positive uplifting stuff for the women, whatever it was he made sure that you experienced some type of emotion. It really is a DaMn shame that he was taken away from us so early in his career! I`m sure he would`ve been doing some great things had he not been killed in Las Vegas. Hopefully someday soon in the near future they can figure out who was TRULY responsible for taking his Life so justice can be served & we no longer have to see the theories (here`s a nice lil` article about some of them). Wishful thinking, yes I know, but hey I had to put it out there. Anyway take a lil` trip while listening to this joint & enjoy some of `Pac's best collaboration songs spanning from early in his career all the way to after his death. I`m sure you`ll like it even if you aren`t a 2Pac fan...

SNooP DoGG`s "FuCK DeaTH RoW [BooTLeG]"...

What`s happenin` y`all? Hope all is good & Life`s treatin` ya right. Today I decided to reach into my BiG ol` collection of CD`s to dust off a decent bootleg that dropped way back in 1999 titled "Fuck Death Row" by Snoop Dogg. Now obviously it was a compilation type joint probably put together by a major Snoop Dogg fan that had access to some unreleased joints, or maybe Snoop did have something to do with this on the down low - who knows for sure? What I do know is that this bootleg features a gang of Snoop Dogg tracks that would appear a year later on the somewhat controversial Snoop Dogg album titled "Dead Man Walkin`" released by Death Row Records in 2000. I know that Suge Knight put that "Dead Man Walkin`" album out as somewhat of a threat to Snoop for leaving Tha Row, but hey maybe Suge got a hold of the bootleg album "Fuck Death Row" liked a few of the tracks that were featured & said 'fuck it I have most of these recordings in the vault, why not give `em an official release'? Anything is possible when it comes to Death Row....LoL...

I honestly don`t know a whole lot about this bootleg aside from the fact that it came out between Snoop`s first & second No Limit Records albums "Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told" & "No Limit Top Dogg". At the time it came out it featured some unreleased joints as well as few joints that were released previously, out of the bootleg`s 13 tracks 3 of them were previously released ("Rock Ya` Body", "Snitches" & "Goldrush"). The rest of the songs were pretty much unreleased aside from "Ride On", but the version on this bootleg is different than the one that`s featured on the "Caught Up Soundtrack" that dropped in 1998. Six of those unreleased joints would later be released by Death Row on the previously mentioned "Dead Man Walkin`" album. Anyways, let`s digest the bootleg now shall we???

Things start off on a good note with the mellow`D out vibes of "Don`t Do The Crime", I`ve also seen this track being labeled "Fuck Death Row" which is probably why they titled the bootleg as so. They got the idea from Snoop`s opening bars on the track where he spits; "I ain`t fuckin` with them niggas no mo`. Shit I feel the same way y`all feel, nigga fuck Death Row! I cut `em loose"...One can only assume that this track was either released during the period of time when Snoop refused to record anything for Death Row because they didn`t want to release him from the label or it was recorded after he left for Master P`s No Limit Records. I tend to lean towards my first guess though because I remember back in the day whenever P was talkin` about his label he would say that he wasn`t down with all the beef ish between artists or coasts, so I doubt that P would condone such bold actions from his newly signed artist. Either way the song`s pretty sweet although it`s somewhat simplistic in style with its long~ass verse it`s still got a nice smoked out Snoop freestyle flow to it...

"Last Meal" follows the bootleg`s opener, I believe that it`s produced by Snoop`s homie Soopafly. I think that this joint was included as a part of bootleg versions of Snoop`s album with the same name that came out in 2000, but never made it to the retail version. It`s not too shabby, far from mind blowin` but the beat`s decent enough to get ya` head noddin`. "Too Black" is the first of the joints that ended up on that "Dead Man Walkin`" album, it`s produced by L.T. Hutton. You can sort of see where Snoop was trying to go with this one, but honestly his flow sounds somewhat uninspired even though the beat`s actually pretty funky. This song may have been one of the scrapped joints from Snoop`s "Doggfather" sessions. Thankfully things perk right up with the banger of a track titled "Rock Ya` Body" which also features The Click (E-40, Suga-T, B-Legit & D-Shot) & Tha Dogg Pound. This song is definitely my favorite on this here bootleg, the beat`s got a nice thumpin` Bay Area vibe. Since I liked it so much I did a lil` more diggin` on it & found out that this joint was officially released on a 1998 compilation~type album titled "D-Shot Presents: Boss Ballin` 2". It`s kind of hard to believe that with a song as DoPe as this not too many folks knew about it, maybe that D-Shot compilation was more of a localized joint? I`m just guessing though, either way it`s definitely worth checkin` out...

"Snitches" follows the body rockin` & just like the previously mentioned track this joint was also officially released being featured on Master P`s double disc album titled "MP Da Last Don" which came out in 1998. Although P kind of ruins it towards the end of the song with all that talkin`, I still think this track`s pretty decent. It was definitely one of my favorite joints off that "MP Da Last Don" album anyway. "I Will Survive" is the second song from this bootleg to be featured on that "Dead Man Walkin`" album. It features Kurupt as well as Technique (or Techniec as I`ve seen it spelled) & is produced by Soopafly. This song`s alright, it was probably put together more so to give Technique some shine. I`m guessing that maybe he was an artist that Snoop was grooming for his Doggystyle Records label at the time. Either way it`s not too bad, but it`s far from "Rock Ya` Body" status....LoL, that`s a given. "Cee Walkin`" is another one of the joints that made its way onto "Dead Man Walkin`", but that version has a totally different beat than the one on this bootleg & it`s also slightly changed to "C-Walkin`". I don`t know who produced the bootleg`s version, but Big Hutch provided the beat for the "Dead Man Walkin`" version. Aside from the beat differences though, lyrically they`re both identical. On this song Snoop reflects back on his past Life`s gang affiliations as a Crip while kickin` some smooth`D out flows with somewhat of a freestyled vibe to `em, worth giving it a listen for sure...

"Tommy" is once again one of those songs that`s also featured on that "Dead Man Walkin`" album, although it`s renamed "Tommy Boy" it still has the same beat & lyrics. It`s produced by Daz & he`s also featured on the track. The beat has some nice funky piano~synth type chords to it as well as a snappy tempo. I dig the beat more so than the lyrics, but overall it`s a decent track. "Hit Roccs" is also featured on "Dead Man Walkin`", renamed "Hit Rocks" of course. I think both versions are produced by DJ Pooh, but I may be wrong so don`t quote me on that. The tracks are slightly different beat~wise with the version on "Dead Man Walkin`" having more of a polished sound to it, but lyrically they`re the same. The beat on the bootleg is still somewhat funky but the D.M.W. version is much better, my opinion of course. This song sounds like it could have been another one of the joints scrapped from the "Doggfather" sessions. On a side note a slightly different version of this song with the title "Buss`n Rocks" produced by DJ Quik would eventually make its was on to Snoop`s 1999 album "No Limit Top Dogg"...

"Hoez" features Luke & Tha Dogg Pound, I think that I remember hearing this song on the bootleg version of Snoop`s "Last Meal", but I could be mistaken. Honestly I was somewhat surprised to hear Luke on here seein` as how he wasn`t so kind to Snoop on that "Cowards In Compton" joint, although to be fair it was most JT Money & that other kat DiSS`n Snoop. Either way they obviously squashed the beef or they wouldn`t have done the song together.....LoL, overall it`s nothing super spectacular but Snoop definitely outshines all the featured artists on this song about lovely women. "Goldrush" was actually labeled as "Gold Rich" on this bootleg, but I retitled it to its original title since it`s from Snoop`s "Doggfather" album & whoever put this bootleg together probably just had a hearing problem.....LoL, Kurupt & a couple kats from the LBC Crew are featured on this song, I think Bad Azz is one of `em. Anyway it`s a decent tune with a wild West vibe to it & some gold rushin` tales...

"Ride On [Rmx]" features Kurupt, this joint has the same lyrics as the song that Snoop had featured on the "Caught Up Soundtrack" released in 1998. That version is titled "Caught Up/ Ride On" & has a different beat than the one on this bootleg, so I`m not totally sure if this one is an official remix or just the original/ demo version of the song, so I just left it tagged as a remix. The bootleg version`s not too shabby, but I still like the version off the "Caught Up Soundtrack" more. "Change Gone Come" closes out this bootleg & features Jewell (uncredited) singing on the hook, she does a great job. Always felt that she could`ve had a bigger career if she had the chance to put out more music during Tha Row`s time on the top, but hey that`s story for another time. Anyway Snoop kicks some smooth & hungry soundin` flows over the L.T. Hutton produced beat that carries a sweet mellow vibe to it. This joint may have been recorded during the "Doggfather" sessions, either way this song`s a great way to end things...


Overall I`d say that this bootleg makes for a good listen, if you`re a BiG Snoop Dogg fan then you should really check it out. There`s a nice range of good tunes on here, not too much filler at all. Something that I should note, after finishing this write up I stumbled upon another Snoop Dogg release from 1998 called "SmokeFest World Tour" & it turns out that most of the songs on there are the same as what`s on this "Fuck Death Row" bootleg just with a different track line up. So at the end of the day I still don`t know much about this "Fuck Death Row" bootleg....LoL, but either way it is a nice addition to the collection regardless, go `head & peep it for ya`self...

Alright y`all let me be perfectly clear here I really wanted to introduce y`all to Sylk-E Fyne by posting up her debut album "Raw Sylk", but unfortunately at the moment I can`t find the CD amongst all the boxes of CD`s that I brought back with me from Canada during my trip back in November....LoL, so y`all are just gon` have to deal with her second album "Tha Cum Up" for now (especially since I had a few requests for a re~uP on this joint). Once I find that "Raw Sylk" CD though I`ll post it up for y`all...


Anyways for those that aren`t familiar with Sylk-E Fyne (she has a MySpace page, but now~a~days who`s peepin` them?....LoL) I`ll school ya real quick. Reppin` South Central, Los Angeles, Sylk-E has been rhymin` since her high school days. It was somethin` that she did to keep herself distracted from the allure of the streets & all the trouble that comes along with `em. Her hard work, both musically & academically eventually paid off because not only did she receive a college degree, but she also link`D up with some Hip Hop legends. She`s worked with 2Pac, Eazy-E, Too $hort, Snoop Dogg & even toured with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. When she first stepped on the scene she was actually working along side the late great Hip Hop Thugsta Eazy-E as a member of G.B.M. (Gangsta Bitch Mentality), a group that he had been cultivating but unfortunately nothing of theirs was ever really released, aside from 2 tracks that I know of ("Shed No Tears" & "House Party") & they didn`t actually get an official release...


Since being a part of a group didn`t really work out to her benefit she decided to strike it out on her own & in 1998 Sylk-E Fyne signed with RCA where she was able to release her first album titled "Raw Sylk". While working on the album she linked up with Chill & the two of them recorded the surprise hit single titled "Romeo & Juliet". It got plenty of play during the summer of `98, I remember seeing the video all over the TV music stations like B.E.T., MTV & Much Music. Needless to say "Romeo & Juliet" was BiG for Sylk, it managed to reach the Number 6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 that year & still remains her biggest hit today. Unfortunately for her though the buzz from the hit smash single wasn`t enough to help generate interest in her debut album "Raw Sylk". Even though the album was a decent effort it sold poorly, peaking at the 121st spot of the Billboard 200. Disappointed in the album`s sales RCA made the decision & dropped her from the label...


So in 2000 Sylk-E Fyne bounced back & signed with Rufftown Records to release her sophomore album titled "Tha Cum Up". The album features her second & last (to my knowledge anyway) charting single titled "Ya` Style", a collabo` with Snoop Dogg & Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The song reached the Number 17 spot on the Billboard Rap Singles chart of that year. Unfortunately for her though I guess Ruffhouse Records was expecting another smash hit single like "Romeo & Juliet" or they were just hoping that people would cop her second album off the strength of that single because they did little to no promo for "Tha Cum Up". Maybe they blew their budget on the music video for "Ya` Style", who knows? The computer animated versions of Snoop & Bizzy are killer though.....LoL, anyway just like her debut album this one was also a commercial disappointment. Some other side~notes about Sylk-E Fyne that y`all may not know are at one point in time she was signed to Snoop Dogg`s Doggystyle Records. She was also featured on the original version of the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony & 2Pac collabo` "Thug Luv"...




 

So what do I think of "Tha Cum Up" you ask? Well I think it`s OK, probably good for a one time listen because honestly it doesn`t really offer anything that`s groundbreaking or worthy of much replay value. If you`re a fan of hers & haven`t heard her second album then give it a listen. If you haven`t heard of Sylk-E. Fyne before though I do apologize, don`t let this album deter you from checkin` out her debut album because it is definitely much better than this one! "I`mma Give It To Ya" is a decent opening track for the album, nothing mind blowin` but it isn`t too shabby either. "How Hot?" featuring Chill is OK, but definitely a long shot from their previous hit "Romeo & Juliet". Ya can`t blame them though for attempting to capture that spark once again. "Dirty South Central" comes off as a weak attempt to ride the jock of the Southern style that was huge at the time, it also features an uncredited appearance by a kat named Diamond I believe, I`m probably wrong on the name though....LoL


"Players Comin` Up" features Phantom Smoove, it`s OK but nothing special. "Lick It" is a weak attempt at a sexual track, but it`s just too lame for my tastes. "My Life" is a decent joint, not sure who the uncredited emcees are though. "Tha Cum Up" features Mr. 'Who Dat' JT Money, it`s not too bad but again nothing super spectacular either. "Dirty Game" features Nicole Renee as well as another uncredited emcee, it doesn`t matter much though because there`s not much to make you want to check it out again anyway. "Ya` Style" is by far the best track on this album, sure the Snoop & Bizzy Bone features help but the beat`s also pretty good. "Why Oh Why?" closes out this album, it`s alright & could`ve been a good way to end things, but the super simplistic hook just makes it lose much of it`s replay value...


I know that it looks like I`m hating on this album, but honestly I`m not I`m just being real. Sylk-E. Fyne has definitely given listeners much better music than what`s included on this album Just check the features that she`s done with other artists like Eazy-E, Too $hort & 2Pac to name a few, or better yet peep her first album "Raw Sylk"! Maybe "Tha Cum Up" sounded better when it first dropped, but 14-soon-to-be-15 years later it`s safe to say that this joint hasn`t aged all that well. The beats range from fair to decent, while the lyrics are just OK. Remember now, this is just my opinion you may really DiG this album & that`s fine - to each their own! So good `head & check it out for ya`self...

DJ Rei DouBLe R & G-Bo The PRo`s "THRoW BaCK: BeST Of VoL. #11 & #12"

First off all, BiG uPs to the homie RuSTy NuTZ! He`s the one that hooked me up with the joint that I`m sharing with y`all today. I`m not sure if he`s the one that personally ripped the mixtape from his collection or if he just passed the files onto me, but either way I`m very thankful. So thanks very much kind sir, the hook up is very much appreciated! Now if any of y`all visitors out there have something that you would like to share with the masses, just holla at me & together we shall get it out there to `em. I`m really trying to gather up a nice collection of the classic mixtapes from the early & late 1990`s because there`s some great tunes on `em. Not only that though, that`s when mixtapes were actual mixtapes not like the ish that gets released now~a~days....LoL, so hook `em up!!!

I got to be honest & say that until RuSTy NuTZ hooked me up with this mixtape I had not heard anything done by DJ Rei Double R & his partner in crime G-Bo The Pro, it`s a DaMn shame I know! Trust me you don`t have to tell me....LoL, anyways for those that aren`t familiar with these 2 kats today`s the day to change that. These 2 fellas reppin` New York have released some major classic mixtapes! It`s definitely a pleasure & an honor to be able  to share with y`all this "Throw Back: Best Of Vol. #11 & #12" tape. What this mixtape consists of is some tracks from their #11 tape titled "Da Stopper" which was released back in March of 1992 & also some joints from their #12 tape titled "Old To Da New" which came out in June of 1992. If you`re a fan of Hip Hop from the early `90's then you should recognize most of the gems on here. The only joint that I found to be a lil` out of place was Mary J. Blige`s "You Remind Me" & that`s only because it`s the sole R&B song on here. It`s a good tune, just a lil` out of place in my opinion...

The only joint on here that I wasn`t DiGG`n much was the "Freestyle" from L.G. (Lyrical Genius), it just wasn`t too impressive. Now to be fair it`s a true freestyle not some pre~written flow stuff so he doesn`t lose my respect, especially since he does drop a nice joint with "Trinidadian" (one of my favorite joints on this tape). On that one he sounds kind of like Slick Rick with the delivery. Until listening to this tape I hadn`t heard anything from L.G. a.k.a. Lyrical Genius so it was kind of a treat, one of the bonuses of discovering this gem of a tape. Another bonus is the awesome remix that Double R does with Rakim`s "Know The Ledge". The original version is my favorite Rakim joint hands down & not only because it reminds me of my favorite movie "Juice" either, it`s just a DoPe gem straight up. So once I heard Double R flippin` it the way he did I was an instant fan because he did it so nicely!!!

One thing that I need to mention about this tape is that there`s actually 21 tracks to it & not 20 like the cover lists. The 3rd track is actually Cypress Hill`s "Real Estate", everything else follows as is on the cover after track 3. The only thing about the 3rd track was that it was pretty jacked up, maybe the tape was eaten by a tape deck & that song was the unfortunate victim, I don`t know......LoL, but to remedy that I just cut off the jacked up parts & mixed in the Cypress Hill song so you`ll notice a slight difference if you listen close enough. The only issue is that because the song was so fucked up I couldn`t tell where it originally ends on the tape so I just left the entire song on there. Some folks may not appreciate what I did & that`s fine (I didn`t do it for you!) I really just did this for my personal collection & besides it makes for a smoother listen anyway. So there you have it go `head & check out this gem...

DaZ DiLLiNGeR`s "ReTaLiaTioN, ReVeNGe & GeT BaCK [HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

Another album gets the HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN treatment, this time around it`s an album that was originally released back in 1998 on the infamous Death Row Records. The album in question is Daz Dillinger`s "Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back", which just happens to be his first solo outing. It`s a pretty decent album in my opinion, I just think that it tends to get over~looked because it was released during a period of time when Death Row Records was basically on it`s last legs. Dre was gone, Snoop was gone, `Pac was murdered & label head Suge Knight was incarcerated. It`s safe to say that things weren`t looking so good for the label, but ya got to give Daz some credit instead of jumpin` ship when all this was happening he decided to take on the role as head producer for the label...


A move of desperation? Maybe so, but I`m thinking that Daz knew that there was still a treasure trove of material left at the Row & he wanted to get his hands on `em. Or maybe he was just trying to keep the label alive because after all he was one of the kats that helped make it as big as it once was. Only Daz really knows for sure, but that`s another story altogether anyway. As for the album Daz was able to oversee the entire project by himself since Suge wasn`t around. Dr. Dre was also absent from the mix so he couldn`t take away any production credits from Daz Dilly. A lot of folks out there mention the fact that some of these songs were probably meant for a second Dogg Pound album seeing as how Kurupt is featured on 4 tracks, it`s a possibility I`m sure. Maybe Daz decided to rescue the tracks from the vaults for his own album seeing as how Kurupt had also left the label when ish began to hit the fan. Either way I`m glad they made his album because they ended up being some of the iLLeR joints on the album...


I guess since Daz was handling most of the production duties (Soopafly co-produced 2 joints) he felt the need to have plenty of his homies featured on the album. Or maybe it was a way for him to complete the album much sooner than he would have if he was doing everything on the solo tip. I`m thinking the latter since the label wasn`t standing on the most stablest of grounds. Daz was probably thinking, "Hey I gotta get this shit out ASAP!" Whatever the case may be it worked out for him because most of the contributions that the featured artists bring to the table compliment the album. Daz sure did a great job when it came to the beats for this project, they definitely bang hard! Some G-Funk at it`s finest, that goes without saying. Something interesting to note about the album`s cover art, it was highly influenced by the Marvin Gaye`s "In Our Lifetime" album cover art...

Now let`s talk about the music & the lil` ''enhancements'' that I made to the album shall we? First off there wasn`t a whole lot of room to include much in the likes of extras, actually I was only able to add one whole track to the album since it`s just under 75 minutes in length originally. So I chose to add the "It Might Sound Crazy [Rmx]" which features the legendary Too $hort just like the original version. I was going to add the track titled "Pimp City" that was originally included as a bonus cut on both the vinyl & cassette versions of this album, but decided against it even though the track is a banger. For those interested in it though it`s produced by Soopafly & he`s also featured on the song. It later went on to appear on Soopafly`s debut album titled "Dat Whoopty Whoop"...


As for the other adjustments that I made to this album they`re more on the minimal side of things when compared to the other albums that I gave the HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN treatment to. Nonetheless some changes were made, the main one being that I took the Intro that was attached to the album`s opening song "Gang Bangin` Ass Criminal" & made it it`s own track (the first one of course). Not sure why the album`s Intro was tacked on to the beginning of the first song anyway, I feel that it`s a stupid idea. I`m sure plenty of folks just ended up skipping over the opening song because of the long~ass Intro, it`s over 2 minutes in length. It`s a DaMn shame too because "Gang Bangin` Ass Criminal" is one of the album`s better songs. So on this version of the album the Intro gets it`s own track so the listeners can get to the opening song without any delay...


"It`s Going Down" features Daz`s partner in rhyme Kurupt as well as the late Prince Ital Joe spittin` bars over a nice thumpin` beat, definitely a trunk thumper! On the funky & smooth`D out "Playa Partners" Daz invites B-Legit & Bo-Rock (of Dove Shack fame) to contribute to this braggadocio track, the end result is a pretty enjoyable listen. On "It Might Sound Crazy", the pimpish collabo` with Too $hort I made some small adjustments to the track`s opening & ending (volume~wise). This way you get to hear the lil` convo` Daz & Soopafly have at the beginning of the song about their feelings on bitches & also the closing bitch clownin` that Daz does at the song`s ending, CLaSSiC material indeed."Our Daily Bread" is another collabo` that features Kurupt & Prince Ital Joe. The beat, at least to me sounds kind of like "If We All Fucc" from the Dogg Pound`s debut album "Dogg Food". The song`s vibe however isn`t sexual at all, more on the G`d up tip as the gun shots at the beginning of the song indicate...





"In California" is one of the album`s singles & it features Val "Lady V" Young singing on the hook. It has a nice lil` G-Funk vibe to it, showin` Cali some love with it`s catchy chorus. For me it`s the perfect Summer time type of joint. "Initiated" is a Dogg Pound, 2Pac & the Outlawz collabo`, or "Thug Pound" as `Pac puts it....LoL, this joint was obviously recorded before `Pac's passing seeing as how he shouts out both the Pound & the Outlawz in the track`s opening seconds. The beat on this joint bangs hard & helps to make it another one of the album`s stand~out tracks. "Oh No" featuring J-Money & Tray Deee is really nothing super spectacular. The beat`s dark & thumps pretty hard while the hook may have ya thinking of that Nate Dogg, Mos Def & Pharoahe Monch joint with the same title, but verse~wise there`s nothing to really talk about...

On the album`s title track "Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back" I made some small volume adjustments to it`s opening so you can really hear Daz taking one of them "$20 pulls".....LoL, the track itself is the only solo song that Daz has on this entire album. The beat definitely meshes well with his vocals, only thing that I don`t understand is who he`s referring to on the track. Who is he out to get revenge on? Those that left the Row during that time period? I`m just a lil` curious. Next up is "O.G.", a collabo` with Snoop & the late great king of hooks Nate Dogg. The beat`s got a nice smooth`D out vibe to it that`s a perfect backdrop to compliment Nate`s singin` on the song. I wonder how Daz was able to slip this joint onto the album seeing as how Snoop wasn`t affiliated with Death Row at the time of this release???

"Baby Mama Drama" tackles the subject of child support, kids & the always lovely baby mama stresses, the song features both Big & Lil` C-Style. It`s not a bad track, but it`s not one of the album`s strongest either. Daz follows the drama up with a love song.....LoL, not the greatest of transitions but that`s not really what`s funny. I just find it comical that Daz takes the time to drop a joint that professes his love for a woman without spittin` any cuss words until he gets to the end of the song & yells "Beeyatch!" Val "Lady V" Young & Big Pimpin` Delemond make appearances on "Only For U". On "Ridin` High" I made some small volume adjustments to the opening seconds of the song, just so you could really hear Daz`s shit talkin`, this song features WC & C.J. Mack. Dub & Daz have a good chemistry together, I guess that`s why they ended up workin` on that DoPe collabo` album together...

The opening seconds of "The Ultimate Come Up" received a lil` volume adjustment, just wanted to boost the levels a bit so we could really hear it. As for the song itself, it`s alright I kind of expected it to be a lil` iLLeR than it is though since both MC Eiht & Bad Azz are featured on it. All three artists deliver some so~so verses, but nothing quote worthy. On "Thank God For My Life" Daz gives a shot at spittin` an inspirational track that sort of makes for an awkward listen. Maybe it`s just his singin` on the hook that ruins it for me....LoL, anyway the song also features Tray Deee, Soopafly, Big Pimpin` Delemond & Bad Azz. The Outro "Why Do We Bang?" has Daz just giving some shout outs to his homies & also has him talkin` some shit as well. He doesn`t really elaborate too much on the answer for the question at hand, but whatever it`s an outro that you`ll probably hear once & then you`re good. That`s where the original album would have ended, but I added an extra joint for your listening pleasure & that track is the "It Might Sound Crazy [Rmx]". Again it features Too $hort & a different beat with more of an R&B type of vibe to it, gone are the adlibs of the chick thru~out the song & also the cussin`. It seems like it`s more of a radio version than an actual remix, but it`s still enjoyable none~the~less...
