S`up y`all? Hope all is well on your side of the screen! Got some what of a rarity for y`all No Limit Records fans. What I`m sharing is a limited edition CD that Master P`s No Limit Records released back in 1998 exclusively thru Blockbuster Music Stores titled "No Limit Soldier Collection". It was being sold for $3.99 if you bought any other No Limit release, $15.99 if you just wanted to cop it on the solo tip tho. Somethin` I found a lil` interesting is the fact that they list the Mac & Soulja Slim (R.I.P.) track "Can I Ball?" as being 'previously unreleased', yet the song is actually on Mac`s "Shell Shocked" album also released in 1998. Maybe his album dropped shortly after this lil` compilation? Something else to note, this may very well be one of No Limit`s shortest releases, aside from EP`s. At only 11 tracks it`s pretty short by No Limit standards....LoL, so go `head & check it out...

Lately I`ve been on a No Limit Records kick, listening to a lot of the label`s older ish from 1995 to 1998. What started it all was Mia X`s debut album from 1995 "Good Girl Gone Bad". Seen it at a pawn shop & scooped it up for a steal ($2), from there I just started to dust off other No Limit releases that I had in my collection. Anyway for those not familiar with Mia X, let me fill you in. Mia X was born & raised in New Orleans, despite what many folks/ websites believe she never lived in New York. Maybe they got it twisted because she started her Hip Hop roots at the early age of 13 in 1984 as a member of New Orleans` first Hip Hop group New York Incorporated. The group consisted of members Mannie Fresh, Denny D, Mia X & DJ Wop...


The reason for the group`s name is pretty simple really, Denny D was the founding member & he was from Hollis, Queens. They stuck it out for a few years, but in 1987 things came to an end when Denny D returned to New York. A lil` bump in the road, still Mia kept it movin`....Life happens however & she decided to put the Rap game on hold for a few years. Mia was blessed with a child & decided that she needed to do what was best & that was to be a mother. After a few years though the Hip Hop bug came BuZZ`n around & bit her again.....LoL, so in 1992 she dropped her first single thru Lamina Records, "The Payback". The single did pretty well sellin` roughly 77, 000 copies...

A few years later (around 1994) comes Master P who at the time was just starting to get his record label No Limit off the ground. Lookin` to gather some more artists for his stable, he stepped to Mia X since he had been impressed by the success of her single. The two chopped it up & eventually she was down with P & his No Limit label, becoming 'the first lady of The Tank'. In 1995 "Good Girl Gone Bad" was released, on the production side of things KLC, Master P, Mo B. Dick, Tre 8, K-Lou & Al Eaton handled the beats. For a debut album Mia X brings a decent amount of topics to the listeners` ears...


From tales of baby~father`s fake~ass no good friends ("Yo` Boyz"), scandalous men anthem ("Can`t Trust A Man"), a single mother`s tribute to her son ("My Everything"), a tribute to her murdered friend ("R.I.P. Jil"), paper cha$in` ("Mission 2 Get Paid") to reppin` for the ladies straight rhyme flexin` & bashin` the men ("Payback II"). Lyrically Mia X can hold her own, I find that she shine`s best when spittin` the deep emotional ish, but she can also bring it on the lyrical tip from time to time. The only thing that I really didn`t like much about this album was the beats, they could`ve been a lot harder. Regardless this makes for a good listen, so go `head & check it out...

MiA X`s "MaMa DRaMa"...

What`s up y`all? Been back from North Cackalack for a few days now & have been goin` thru my CD collection grabbin` random albums to listen to & today I just happened to grab Mia X`s third album titled "Mama Drama". It was released back in 1998 & turned out to be one of Mia`s more successful albums since it ended up charting at #7 on the Billboard 200 (#3 on the Top R&B/ Hip Hop Albums chart). I believe that there were two singles for this album; the first was titled "Whatcha Wanna Do?" & it features Charlie Wilson (GAP Band fame) & the second single was "Imma Shine", check out the music videos below...

Of course on the production side of things Beats By The Pound handled the work. KLC cooked up 8 beats (tracks 1, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14 & 19), Craig B did 5 tracks (tracks 3, 5, 8, 11 & 17), O`Dell did 2 tracks (tracks 16 & 18) & Carlos Stephens produced 3 beats (tracks 10, 13 & 15). "Fallen Angels (Dear Jill)" (track 20) was a team effort between both KLC & O`Dell, while Craig B & O`Dell collab`D for "Whatcha Wanna Do?" (track 2). The album pretty much sticks to the No Limit blueprint, very lil` outside contributions. Aside from the Charlie Wilson & Fat Joe features everything else about the album says N-O-L-I-M-I-T...

Mia`s third effort "Mama Drama" is a decent album to listen to, there`s really only 2 tracks that I didn`t care for much. "Thugs Like Me" reminds me too much of that Jay-Z joint "I Know What Girls Like" with Lil` Kim & Puff...LoL, & I don`t like that song either. The other joint that I`m not really feelin` is "Sex Ed." featuring Silkk The Shocker with Porsha on the second verse & the hook. It`s really just Silkk`s part that I`m not DiGG`n though....LoL, can`t go wrong with Mia`s verse especially when she`s talkin` about "deep~throatin`, never ever ever chokin`"....heheh...

 

As for tracks that I`m DiGG`n there`s a good lil` list that I`ll share it with y`all. The opening track "Bring It On" is a decent No Limit Soldier collabo` cut that has Mia sharing the mic with Fiend (who also rocks the hook), Mystikal, Mac, C-Murder & Skull Duggery over the thumpin` KLC beat. Something sad that I noticed about the previously mentioned track, 4 of the featured artists are currently incarcerated (Mac, C-Murder, Skull Duggery & Mystikal). That`s a DaMn shame! "Whatcha Wanna Do?" is a love song that has a nice lil` GAP Band vibe to it courtesy of Charlie Wilson, while the bouncy Craig B produced track "Imma Shine" makes for a good danceable joint... 

"I Think Somebody..." is a track that`ll have some folks gettin` hype.....LoL, KLC`s beat provides a nice militant sound complete with guns bustin` & bullets hittin` while Fiend`s voice brings aggression to the track. "Mama`s Tribute" has X spittin` an MC Lyte type tribute over another KLC backdrop, if you know your Ol` School you can hear a lil` bit of Lyte`s "Paper Thin" in the beat. "Ride Or Run" features the late Big Ed (R.I.P.) & Steady Mobb`n over a poundin` Carlos Stephens beat. "Puttin` It Down" is another No Limit posse cut featuring Fiend, Mac, Mystikal, Kane & Abel with Silkk The Shocker makin` a small lil` non~rappin` cameo...

Ghetto Commission is featured alongside O`Dell who sings the hook on "Ghetto Livin`" while "Play Wit` Pussy" has Mia X flexin` her estrogen over KLC`s thumpin` beat. Carlos Stephens does his thing providing the backdrop for "Don`t Blame Me", a collabo` that features C-Murder & Mr. Serv-On. All rappers kick some deep thought provoking lyrics, but I feel that C-Murder steals this track. "Daddy" is a tribute to Mia`s father, while "Like Dat" has her spittin` to the doubters & haters. My favorite joint on this album is "Flip 2 Rip", a DoPe collabo` with Mac...

Now there were also a few songs that were just alright at least in my ear & they are "Don`t Start No Shit", "Mama Drama", the Snoop & Fat Joe featured "What`s Ya` Point?" (they could`ve did much more with this track in a unity sense for HiP HoP), "TRU Bitches" & "Fallen Angels (Dear Jill)". These songs aren`t bad, they`re just overshadowed by the other joints on this album, but they`re still way better than "Thugs Like Me" & "Sex Ed."....LoL, so go `head & give the album a listen...

MaSTeR P`s "iF I CouLD CHaNGe" [PRoMo CD SiNGLe]...

I`m still on a No Limit Records kick y`all so here`s another CD Single from Master P. This joint was released in 1997 & comes from the "I`m Bout It Soundtrack". I remember the "If I Could Change" song because it`s how I was first introduced to Master P & his No Limit empire. It was actually the video that I had seen, it was on some shortly ran HiP HoP music video show (can`t recall the name of the show sorry). They were actually talkin` to P about the "I`m Bout It" movie & his whole label & ish while showin` some behind the scenes footage of the video shoot for "If I Could Change". It was cool, some of the stuff P was talkin` about was pretty interesting. I may still have the VHS tape that I recorded the show on, if I can find it I`ll try & upload the segment I was just talkin` about...

With this single here you are getting the Street, Radio & Instrumental versions of "If I Could Change", a track that features Master P & Steady Mobb`n with O`Dell singin` on the hook, while you only get the Street version of Mia X`s "Down To Do Whatever". DJ Daryl produced "If I Could Change" & KLC handled the production for Mia X`s "Down To Do Whatever". Both joints are a decent listen, though I prefer the Master P & Steady Mobb`n collabo` "If I Could Change" more than Mia X`s track. It just has more substance than Mia`s tough~talkin` braggadocio joint. Anyway, go ahead & check out the music...
