Been on a little bit of a nostalgic trip lately, checkin` out plenty of early `90's mixtapes & well this joint just happen to stand out amongst the ones that I had been listening to. The mixtape in question coomes from DJ Cocoa Chanelle titled "The Best Kept Secret". Honestly I wasn`t familiar with any of her work prior to this mixtape, but I truly enjoyed this one! Her selection of music, mixin` skills, as well as the 'Cocoa Mix' blends are all on point here! If you`re a fan of `90's Hip Hop & R&B I`m sure you won`t be disappointed. I grabbed the original files from DJ Step One`s blog so BiG uPs must go out to him! I simply boosted up the volume on a few of the tracks & separated the Side A & Side B files into individual tracks for easier listening. The original files are also included for those that care about that type of thing, enjoy...

I know that I haven`t posted anything in a while, but no this blog isn`t dead yet! I have just been busy with Life, it`s bound to happen once you become a parent....LoL, anyways I`m going to attempt to get a few posts up on here within the next few days. To start things off I have a Re~uP of a mix that I had originally put together back in 2009. Since I have had numerous requests to post up new links for it I decided to do so seeing as how I was able to grab a bunch of CD`s from my parents` crib in Canada when I visited them in November. This mix that I`m referring to is titled "BuDD@H BLe$$eD EnT. PReSeNTs: I`m TaLK`n ABouT CHiCKeN WiNGZ". At the time that I had originally put it together it was a nice combination of new & older tracks, but now obviously it`s just old & older joints....LoL, anyway the iNTRo says it all! "BiG PuN: The LeGaCy" [DoCuMeNTaRy]...

Today I have a lil` documentary for y`all to check out about the late & great Big Pun that was released back in 2009. It`s titled "Big Pun: The Legacy" & it was directed by Vlad Yudin & was released thru Vivendi Entertainment clockin` in at roughly 90 minutes in length. Overall I think that it`s a great documentary, Vlad Yudin does an awesome job puttin` this together. I really dug the entire film from the opening montage all the way thru to the conclusion where Vlad documents Big Pun`s final days. It was also iLL hearing from some of the artists that Pun worked with, influenced or both...   

Yudin takes the viewers on a 90 minute tour of Big Pun`s Life; from the ups, the downs, the tragedy, the success, his childhood, his hustlin` days, his relationship with his wife Lisa, how he was as a father, to the food addictions & depression. You definitely get a good look at what made Christopher Rios the one that the Hip Hop world knows as Big Pun. You also get a lil` footage that was previously unseen by the public as well as a huge chunk of info` about Pun that most fans probably didn`t know about. Now I don`t want to give away too much about the documentary because I want y`all to actually watch it so I just leave ya with this lil` final thought about it; it`s a great documentary that gives us pretty much a complete 360 degree view of Big Pun, flaws & all. It definitely honors "the first Latin to go platinum" & doesn`t tarnish his legacy at all. Well worth the watch, so go `head & check it out...

The BeaTNuTs` "SToNe CRaZy [HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN]"...

What`s the deal y`all? I hope that the week has been good to you so far. Today I`m gon` share with y`all another HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN of an album originally released back in 1997 by The Beatnuts. It`s actually my favorite album from the crew & that album`s titled "Stone Crazy". What`s different about this version of "Stone Crazy" is pretty simple; I added the "Off The Books [Rmx]" from their 1998 Remix EP titled "The Spot" & then I also added some instrumentals & acapellas which came mostly from 12 inch singles. I just felt that the album itself is viciously slept on so I figured that it would be kind of iLL to give it a lil` more interest by including a few extra joints; the instrumentals because well it`s really where The `Nuts truly shine. The acapellas were included because I think that it`s kind of interesting to hear the lil` things in the vocals that you may have missed out on `cuz you were noddin` ya` head to the bangin` beats. The "Off The Books [Rmx]" was included because I figured maybe a few folks may not have heard it, even if it`s not as iLL as the original...

Sure Psycho Les & Ju Ju may not have the iLLeST lyrics, but that doesn`t really matter all that much when you allow your eardrums to take in the amazingly DoPe beats that these kats create. Each track & even the Interludes have their own unique sound, nothing on the album sounds alike yet the tracks still manage to mesh will together to make one awesome piece of work. The Soul, Funk & even Ragtime samples that the Beatnuts chose to use help birth some pretty original & funky vibes. I don`t really have the time to go over each track individually like I would really like to do so you will just have to trust me when I say that this entire album is a great listen! If you are a fan of head noddin` funky beats you need to listen to this...

The standout joints for me are; "Bless The M.I.C." with its grindin` guitars & catchiness, "Here`s A Drink" with its staggering drums, "Off The Books" (probably the best track on the album) with the guest stealin` verse from the late great Big Pun & its uptempo drums & Sesame Street flute sample, "Do You Believe?" is my favorite track on the album with its unmistakably DoPe beat & its serious but iLL hook, "Find That" is another DoPe track with its infectious beat even if it`s a lil` on the short side, then there`s "Give Me Tha Ass" a comical X-rated track that flips the same sample that was later used for Will Smith`s "Men In Black" track (you can read a lil` something about how the `Nuts felt about that track using the same sample here). So there ya have it folks now go `head & give it a listen, you`ll be glad that ya did...

Here`s another CD Single that I scooped up during another lil` visit to a pawn shop. Big Pun, truly an individual who`s presence & humor HiP HoP`s been missin`! Unless you`ve been under a rock, you know that the BiG homie`s word~play was straight cashew & then some plus tax. I still remember when I first heard Big Pun, it was on a college Hip Hop radio show (can`t recall the exact show) & the song was "You Ain`t A Killer"...

 

 

I was impressed, definitely dug his lyrical content & the beat was pretty sick as well. However when I first heard "Twinz (Deep Cover `98)" I was straight blown away! Pun was spittin` nothin` but heaters, especially when he flexed the now famous "Dead in the middle of Little Italy..." part, dude was just sick with it! As for the rest of the song, I think that both Big Pun & Fat Joe did a good job payin` homage to the West Coast with this one. Using Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg`s "Deep Cover" Instrumental both kats complimented one another & lyrically they held the East Coast down...

 

 

Since this is a single you get the Album Version, the Clean Version, the Instrumental & the A Cappella. One good thing about this single is that the A Cappella isn`t edited & the other thing worth mentioning is that the Clean Version isn`t edited in an annoying way. The cuss words are edited by sound effects instead of the good ol` classic but unenjoyable BeePs.....LoL, so you can still listen to the Clean Version without gettin` fuckin` annoyed. So do ya`self a favor & check it out...

RaHSuN`s "I`LL Be ARouND" [CD SiNGLe]...

 Keepin` things movin` with another CD Single for my whole 2 visitors....LoL, this one comes from RahSun. Now please excuse the fact that I really know nothing of him (feel free to school me) aside from the fact that he released his debut album "It`s Not A Game" back in 1998. I do know that he`s reppin` "Bang City", New York (wherever that is, I have no clue). The reason I grabbed this single when I seen it was for the Big Pun feature. The song isn`t bad at all, sure you can tell it was geared more for radio spins but it still bangs. The beat was produced by Far East Flavor, who I`m guessin` was 550 Music`s in~house producer because most of the other production credits that I`ve seen for Far East Flavor have been for other artists on the 550 Music label, like Tami Hert & Demond. Anyways check this joint out for ya`self, I`m pretty sure you`ll DiG what ya hear...

BiG PuN`s "PRe-TRiaL MoTioN" [PRoMo TaPe]...

Gotta say that I miss Big Pun, dude`s humor was definitely refreshing for HiP HoP! With that said, I was going thru my HiP HoP collection last night searching for something to share with y`all & came across this cassette that I hadn`t listened to since I first got it from DJ LiNT`d PoCKeTs back in 1998. This joint right here is a lil` promo tape that Loud Records put together just before Pun`s first album "Capital Punishment" was released to help generate a buzz...

It features a few cuts from that album as well as a few collabo`s that Pun did along with a couple B-Side singles. Another cool thing about this tape is that the track "I`m Not A Player" is slightly different that the album version, so that alone is worth checkin` it. Originally while I was editing the files I was going to filter out the cassette~hiss, but when I tried it just sounded like Big Pun had eaten some Yoplait Tubes....LoL, so I decided to just leave them alone. The only thing that I did was adjust the volume & separate the tracks for easier listening -- so go `head & give this a listen...
