What`s good? What`s happenin`?? What`s lovely y`all??? As usual I hope it`s going well for ya `cuz we all know that we ain`t likin` it when Life`s molestin` the fuck out of us! 😂With all of that being said I`ve been listening to a lot of Da Brat`s music this past week & I`ve gotta say she`s MaD underrated when it comes to mentions of iLL Women rockin` the mics in Hip Hop! This is clearly my opinion of course, if you don`t agree that`s fine but you should probably stop reading this before ya get 'triggered'... 😁

 

I was listening to her 2011 released mixtape titled "Life After Death" earlier today & was really digg`N it! Can`t even front, I`ve been a fan of hers ever since I heard her debut "Funkdafied" back in 1994. That joint`s a CLaSSiC to me y`all, I don`t care what ya say about it! Anyway, let me get back to this mixtape. I know that I`ve actually shared it here before back around 2012-ish, but all the links on that post are long Elvis`D out, so that`s one reason for this post. It needed a Re~uP, the other reason is of course because I`m a notoriously BiG fan of Da Brat`s & I feel that this joint is pretty much the last of her musical outputs that fans got to hear before she pretty much bowed out silently. Yeah-yeah, apparently she`s got a 2018 release titled "The Return" which may very well exist but until I get to hear it fuck all of that! 😄 From what Jermaine Dupri has said Shawntae Harris a.k.a. Da Brat was released from prison on February 28, 2011. So this previously mentioned mixtape was definitely put together shortly after Da Brat-Tat-Tat-Tat was inhaling that freedom oxygen. I was really glad that she had decided to get right back into the recording booth after being released from prison because it seemed to me like she was using those moments as a way to release some of the ish that she had heavy on her chest, some release~therapy if you will without the fake~ass doctor Phil. 😆 

First thing`s first, I gotta mention how that lil` explosion sound & Jermaine Dupri "This is a So So Def World Premier" tag that`s used on this 'mixtape' is hella fuckin` annoying & track ruining! Soundin` like a Temu DJ Clue.😀 Honestly I`m thinkin` of flippin` an HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN of this joint so I can take it out especially since I have already adjusted the volume on a few of these tracks as well as fixed how the tracks ended without cuttin` off ish. It just didn`t sound right to me so I was cuttin` & pastin` like a ransom note writing mutha fucka so the tracks could flow smoothly listening~wise! J.D. says that he doesn`t smoke trees, but he was definitely on something thinking that folks wanted to hear that bullshit tag all over this 'mixtape' that`s for certain. From what I can find online this joint was actually released as a freebie back in 2011 thru the global14.com website which is apparently affiliated with So So Def Records somehow. Nowadays that site`s  lookin` like MySpace or Detroit in a Robocop movie, but either way that ish is straight up Sid Justice...........R.I.P.! The DJ that`s hosting this so~called 'mixtape' is Greg Street some of y`all Hip Hop heads may recognize the name...

It was funny to me when I was reading the reviews by the online folks for this joint, they were so butt~hurt claimin` some ish like "How can she use this title for her mixtape when it's Biggie`s last recorded album`s title?" That`s where y`all fools that know nothing about what you`re talkin` about come in naturally. What you fucks failed to observe is the fact that it was actually about a flip of words regarding her music career after being recently released from prison. It had nothing to do with Biggie at all, but some of y`all fuckin` clowns really felt she was trying to capitalize off of Biggie. Never mind the fact that both artists have worked together on a track & it was never ever pimp`D out for clout... 😉

 

Greg Street`s on the Intro, it`s nothing special. The Brat~Tat~Tat~Tat opens things up with & rips "It`s Brat", her flip of Meek Mill & Rick Ross` "2Pac`s Back". Da Brat mellows things out with "West Side", it`s best to smoke one to this because it`s got a smooth`D out G-Funk vibe on it. "Get It, Get It" has a good street vibe to it thanks to the Lox`s Jadakiss with an R&B twist courtesy of Brandon Hines. Da Brat`s remix flip of YC`s "Racks" is far iLLeR than the original, perhaps it`s my 80`s Baby Ignorance but it sounds waaaaaay better than this one~hit wonder`s track -- my opinion of course! Her remix flip of Miguel`s "Sure Thing" with J.D. is something pleasant with the Biggie "Dead Wrong" vibes on it...

Following that is perhaps the most realest joint on this 'mixtape', "Second Chance" a deep emotional release that has Da Brat speakin` on her trials & tribulations at the time; you know all the ish that she had to experience while locked down. "Fab 5 Freddy" is some clever word~play regarding some raw Hip Hop, more so her style & flow makin` it seem like she talkin` about some dope....you know that ish that would have the cops grinning upon discovery. "Dumb, Stupid, Crazy" has Da Brat & fellow Chi~Town`R Twista flexin` them rapid flows, definitely a treat. Her remix flip of Kelly Rowland`s "Motivation" is spectacular & if you don`t think so we can`t be friends. 😂Never mind that Chris Brown`s not on here & definitely forget what J.D. spits on the "Look At Me Now [Rmx]" Da Brat flexes her skills all over that beeyatch & owns it!!!

What`s goin` on y`all? Hope all is good. I celebrated another birthday last Friday, gotta say that it feels good to be livin` this wonderful gift called Life. Today I`m gon` share with y`all a lil` something that I started workin` on a week or two ago. It`s not crazy super spectacular or anything like that.....LoL, it`s just Chuck D`s 1996 solo album "Autobiography Of Mistachuck" with a lil` tweakin` done to it. In a nutshell all that I have done is simple really. I just spent a lil` time separating the Intro & the Flip Squad Breaks from the tracks they were a part of to make them individual tracks instead. For example the first Flip Squad Break was originally at the end of "Niggativity....Do I Dare Disturb The Universe?", I just separated it & then made it a new track on it`s own. I also cut out the silence on "Paid" just after the Flip Squad Break from approx. 4:40-9:22 on the original track, then made the hidden joint "The 10 Resentments Of The Industry" it`s own track. After that I added "It`s The Pride" a track Chuck D had featured on the "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation released in 1995. Then I added a few cuts from Chuck D`s "No" 12 inch (thanks to the homie JankZ for the link) to finish up things...

Got a funny lil` story that I feel like sharing with y`all about this Chuck D album. When I first copped it back in 1996 I was listening to it after a long hard day of school.....LoL, ah the good ol` days, anyway I was really tired because I was up late the night before studying for a Science test so I started noddin` off to sleep. Not sure how long I was asleep for, but I was suddenly woken up from my lil` nap by the crazy sounds of Chuck D`s voice on the hidden track...let`s just say it scared the fuck outta me at first `cuz I had it BuMP`n pretty loud on my small lil` Zellers bookshelf stereo...LoL, anyway let`s get to the music shall we? I`ve always been a fan of Public Enemy ever since I first heard `em from the dubbed tape my homie Pablo hooked me up with in elementary school. They`re still my favorite Hip Hop group to this day, so once I first heard about Chuck`s solo joint I just had to check it out...

There`s no denying that Chuck D`s militant vocal tone grabs hold of your attention, so just imagine the knowledge that`s dropped without the comedy relief of Flavor Flav on Chuck`s solo effort. Don`t worry Gary G-Wiz & Eric 'Vietnam' Sadler hit us with some of that iLL Bomb Squad production to keep ish from gettin` to preachy. The album opens up with a fitting sample of a scene from the Spike Lee movie "Clockers". A few of the movie`s characters are talkin` about Hip Hop & how Chuck D isn`t the hardest rapper. Sticky Fingaz (Onyx fame) actually plays the role of Scientific (one of the characters in the movie) who was a part of the previously mentioned discussion in the scene, I wonder if that`s how dude really feels or was it just script?....LoL, following the short lil` Intro comes the album`s first song "Mistachuck". It`s backed by an iLL beat with a sample of Jack Nicholson laughin` crazily as The Joker from the 1989 film "Batman" while Chuck D addresses the doubters...

Next up is the album`s lead single titled "No", a joint that has Chuck speakin` on everything that was wrong with Hip Hop back in the 9-6. Funny thing is most of the ish that he mentions still rings true today...

"Generation Wrekkked" features another uncredited appearance by Kyle "Ice" Jason (he was also featured on "No"). Here Chuck`s basically letting folks know that unless they change their ways of living they`re only going to keep the cycle of ignorance alive. The slick wordplay on the hook will definitely have you rappin` right along with it ("If I can`t change the people around me, I change the people around me...) "Niggativity...Do I Dare Disturb The Universe?" is a nice track about goin` against the grain. As simplistic as the hook is I`m still DiGG`n it, maybe it`s the head noddin` beat with the organ sample.....LoL, after that track is the first Flip Squad Break. "Free Big Willie" follows the lil` radio show break with it`s funky jazzy~vibed beat it`s sure to get that head bobb`N like $2 hookers on pay~day. Good ol` P.E. affiliate Professor Griff shows up for a lil` interlude & kicks some spoken word/ poetry slam type ish on "Horizontal Heroin"...

After the brief lil` interlude Chuck D is joined by Abnormal, C. Brewzer & Kyle Jason on "Talk Show Created The Fool". A joint where all involved attack the television talk shows of the day for all the negative influences & ignorant behavior that they choose to promote to the masses. The second Flip Squad Break follows, just like the first break it was a part of the previous track so I decided to split it from "Talk Show..." so it was it`s own track. This break has Da Brat (So So Def fame) callin` in to the radio show.......LoL, it`s kinda funny but really only a one time type of funny. Anyway she sounds like she`s was smokin` on some of that really good Green, if she wasn`t stoned when she did that I don`t like Hip Hop....LoL, you gotta share Brat baby...

"Underdog" is a lil` cautionary tale that has Chuck warning his listeners that not everything is what is seems, in both Life & the Hip Hop game. The late, great & legendary Isaac Hayes is featured on "But Can You Kill The Nigger In You?" It`s a song that has both Hayes & D sendin` a message out to the Black men of the world that are livin` foul. Don`t worry The Rhyme Animal puts the preachin` on pause to let us know that he`s still an emcee. On "Endonesia" he collab`s with B-Wyze & Dow Jonz, over a nice funkdafied vibe while all three kats flex some decent punchlines. The third Flip Squad Break follows the rhyme wreckin`. "The Pride" is next, a great uplifting track about Black pride. Some may recognize this track from the "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation that was released in 1995 however the beat isn`t the same as the one from the comp` & that joint was titled "It`s The Pride" (either way both tracks are DoPe, that`s why I added the other joint to this album as well:)...

"Paid" follows & is another collabo` track, this time Chuck invites Kendu (Hyenas In The Desert fame) & Melquan along to kick rhymes. Although it`s not as good as "Endonesia" the track`s beat & scratched in Biggie sample for the hook should keep ya interested long enough to make it thru the song. The fourth & final Flip Squad Break is next, again  it was originally a part of the track before it until I split it for it`s own glory....LoL, then I also removed the almost 5 minutes of silence that followed the lil` radio break to get to the hidden track which I labelled "The 10 Resentments Of The Industry". It`s not an actual song, Chuck D`s just basically talkin` (with his vocals slowed & fucked with to sound like a demon or some ish) about how fucked up the Industry is. It`s a real trip listening to this track off some `Shrooms that`s for sure.....LoL, then again I could say the same `bout E-40. Anyways after the hidden track that`s where the album would normally end, but due to boredom mainly I decided to add a few more joints to the album so it would fill an 80 minute CD...

So the first of the bonus joints if you will is the previously mentioned "It`s The Pride", originally from the 1995 released "Pump Ya` Fist" compilation that features such artists as KRS-One, 2Pac, Fugees & Rakim to name a few. The final four bonus cuts come from Chuck D`s "No" 12 Inch single, gotta BiG uP JankZ for the link on that very much appreciated! The "No [Mr. Elite Part Two Version - Clean]" has the same lyrics as the one on the album, but censored of course & the beat`s a lil` more on the hornier side of things sound~wise. Would love to hear an uncensored version of this! "No! [The Wreck League Massive Remake]" has Chuck D sharing the mic with Kendu of Hyenas In The Desert, Son Slawta Melquan, Dow Jonz, N-Tense, Charlie Brown, Flip & Sharp of Backstabbers, B-Wyze, Outloud of Blahzay Blahzay & Kyle Johnson. As iLL as this joint is it should have been an actual bonus track on the album, my opinion of course. The "No [Revenge Of The Anti-Pimps Acapella]" is just that, an acapella. The last track on this HeRBaN DeLuXe VeRSioN is "No [The Kyle Ice Jason Instr.]" (not The Lyle Ice Jason Instr. as I incorrectly labelled it.....LoL, I blame my big fingers)...

So do ya`self a favor & check out this solo album by Public Enemy`s frontman, I`m sure a lot of headz slept on this when it first dropped. The production that`s provided by the Bomb Squad is stellar for ya` stereo & the messages that Chuck spits over said production is definitely worth the time to listen to. It`s definitely waaaaaaaaaay better than any solo Flavor Flav album could ever even wish to sound like......LoL, that goes without sayin`!  Now I DiG Flav & all but DaMn the one solo album that I heard of his was pretty bad (it`s so bad I forget it`s title)....LoL, let`s just say that it`s not his greatest contribution to Hip Hop. Who knows maybe I`ll post up that album for y`all to check out some day, but for now you have Chuck D`s "Autobiography Of Mistachuck" with some added bonus cuts, enjoy...

What`s good my peoples? I hope all is well with y`all! Today I have for y`all a lil` somethin` that I didn`t even know existed. Now it`s not really rare or anything, I just wasn`t aware of this release. What I`m talkin` about is the double EP album that Da Brat released back in 1996 titled "Anuthafunkdafiedtantrum". If you`re a fan of Da B-R-A-T then you quickly caught on to the fact that the title is just a combination of her first 2 album titles; "Funkdafied" & "Anuthatantrum". What you get with this joint is a few songs from both previously mentioned albums, however they`re edited for radio play, or "Rated PG" for the church folks as it states on the album`s cover art. You also get a few songs that weren`t included on either "Funkdafied" or "Anuthatantrum" & those tracks are; "Sittin` On Top Of The World Part II", "Funkdafied [DJ Club Mix]", "Fa All Y`all [Rmx]" & "Da B-Side" featuring Biggie. The Biggie & Brat collabo` is also featured on the "Bad Boys Soundtrack", both are the same Radio Versions...

One thing about this album is that they clearly didn`t need to make it double CDs, it all definitely could`ve fit onto one disc. I get that each CD is an EP, but it would`ve been a lot cheaper for the label......LoL, oh yeah this was released before Napster & music sharing blew up on the Interwebs so the label had more then a few extra dollar$ to spare. Anyway, the first disc contains clean versions of tracks from Da Brat`s "Anuthtantrum" album, while the second disc contains clean versions of tracks from her "Funkdafied" album. You would think that they would`ve had the order of the discs switched since "Funkdafied" dropped first, but that`s another story. The first disc sounds like this...."Sittin` On Top Of The World", "Just A Little Bit More" & "Keepin` It Live" are edited by simply muting the cusses, no BeePs here. "Let`s Get High" is edited by added record scratches over the cusses, while the hook is replaced with the sounds of someone takin` a hit of some Weed instead of "We can all get high". Da Brat reworks her lyrics for this version of "Ghetto Love" featuring T-Boz of TLC fame. "Sittin` On Top Of The World Part II" is more like a remix than a sequel. The beat`s decent while the cusses are muted, I wonder if there`s an unedited version of this track out there???

Disc 2 gives us "Funkdafied", "Fa All Y`all", "Mind Blowin`", "Give It 2 You" & "Da B-Side" edited with reworked lyrics. The "Funkdafied [DJ Club Mix]" is pretty good & the "Fa All Y`all [Rmx]" is nice & funky. Out of these 2 CD`s I gotta say that I dig the second one a lot more, mainly because Da Brat took some extra time to rewrite her lyrics so the tracks weren`t annoyingly edited. I wonder why they didn`t choose to do things the same way for the first disc? Anyway you`ve read my lil` thoughts on the album, go `head & check it out...

What`s goin` on y`all? Hope that your Friday`s gon` be good to you! Today I`m going to share with y`all an album that I`ve been listening to all morning since I decided to pull it out of my CD collection & take it back to 1994. The album is titled "Funkdafied" which is Da Brat`s debut album (she`s also the first solo female emcee to go platinum). I still remember bein` a young buck buyin` the cassette from the Music World store at the Billings Bridge mall back when it first dropped. Let`s just say that it got plenty of play in my Sony Walkman...

Now for whatever reason if you don`t happen to know who Da Brat is I will drop a lil` run~down so you get a lil` more familiar. Although you`d think she was reppin` Cali` Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris is actually from Chicago, Illinois. Story goes that she linked up with Jermaine Dupri & his So So Def record label back in 1992 after she had won a local Rap contest that was sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. The prize was a chance to meet Kris Kross (who at the time were blowin` up with their hit single "Jump"), they in turn introduced her to J.D. who was so impressed by her talent that he signed her to his label. During an interview for the newspaper the Atlanta Journal - Constitution she told the reporter she received her rappin` moniker "Da Brat" because she`s, "a spoiled only child"...

Seein` how Snoop Dogg was blowin` up at the time in the West Coast, J.D. decided to mold Da Brat`s image as 'the female Snoop'. So when he cooked up the beats for her debut it`s no surprise that they are all heavily G-Funk influenced. Don`t get it twisted though, Da Brat is not a Snoop Dogg clone rappin` over some wannabe~Dre beats. Da B-R-A-T comes original & can flow like the winds in the city of Chi, while Jermaine Dupri provides her with some great Funky backdrops to drop her lyrical tornadoes. Production~wise if J.D. has ever cooked up anything DoPeR than these 9 tracks here, I just simply haven`t heard it yet!!!

 

"Da Shit Ya Can`t Fuc Wit`" has Da Brat flexin` her murderous lyrical skillz. "Fa All Y`all" features Kandi of Xscape fame & it reminds me of somethin` you`d hear at a block party with it`s bouncin` beat gettin` folks up dancin`. "Fire It Up" is a nice smokey~vibed ode to blazin` up some Buddah (it works trust me, smoke a joint to this one). "Funkdafied", which was a #1 Rap Single, is just well that, funkdafied....LoL, what`s not to like about this? "May Da Funk Be Wit` Cha" continues the funky vibe with some DoPe Cali~esque synthesizer work & features Xscape`s LaTocha Scott...
 




"Ain`t No Thang" features Y-Tee of Da Bush Babees, here Da Brat shows the doubters that she can`t spit with the best of `em. "Come & Get Some" has Da Brat teamin` up with Mac Daddy of Kriss Kross. "Mind Blowin`" has a good & funky beat packed with some G`d up synths (there`s even some organ in there). Da Brat closes things off nicely with the J.D. collabo` "Give It 2 You". It`s got probably one of the best beats on the entire album. So there ya have it, although it`s a tad bit short in length Da Brat`s debut is a banger so go on & check it out for ya`self & fire it up...
