I felt that this joint was something that needed some sort of documentation when it comes to Hip Hop History. So I decided to edit it up by separating the tracks & interludes, as well as BuMP`n up the volume on a few tracks just to make it more enjoyable. I really miss the days of record labels actually coming up with some original promo type of stuff when it came to an album. You know to generate a buzz for their soon-to-be-released albums. At times you could end up hearing an unreleased version of a song or a remix. Sadly, however with this promo tape that`s not the case! This joint just consists of album snippets & some interludes that has Guru actin` like he`s sneakin` a listen of these snippets amongst one of his homies...

CRU`s "Lisa Lipps b/w Wreckgonize" [Promo 12 Inch]...

Yeah I`ve dusted off a few CRU joints since I`ve found that 'lost' harddrive, I may as well share this one while I`m at it! Now keep in mind most of the files on said HDD are 25 or so years old, this one`s only in 192 sound quality wise unfortunately, but hey it is what is simply is. Not 3D-HD enough for ya? Carry on my friend.......LoL, I`m just happy to be able to access these files after all these years! Anyway as with most CRU tracks Yogi handles the production on both songs featured on this promo 12 inch single released back in 1997 by Rush Associated Labels. "Lisa Lipps" is the more upbeat of the 2 joints on this 12 inch album promo. I know that there were a few kats that laughed seeing Lisa Lipps & 12 inch promo in the same sentence, `80's & `90's babies stand up.......LoL

 

In all honesty & I`m only guessing here, this "Lisa Lipps" joint sounds as tho it all came together after a good solid Rhythm Blunt session -- at least to my ears anyway. It just sounds as tho The Mighty Ha is straight free~flowin` off the top of the dome after vibin` to the beat while on that extremely nice previously mentioned Rhythm Blunt session. "Wreckgonize" is definitely the darker of the 2 tracks on this 12 inch & features an opening verse from the late & underappreciated Harlem emcee Black Rob. The song`s production is solid & definitely captures the vibe of the lyrics, all 3 verses are great! However the hook to me is kind of lazy yet surprisingly still sort of works with everything else. Remember kids, "Carlos The Basehead is lurkin`..." word to Yogi`s second verse! You get the Dirty, Clean & Instrumental versions of each song on this promo so go `head, check it out & enjoy...

What`s up y`all? I hope that all it well with you! Yeah-yeah, I know that it`s been a long while & I bet ya thought I had given up on the ol` blog? Nope, just busy with Life you know the deal if you`re a dad! Anyway, I am back from the hiatus to share with y`all a lil` promo CD single that I dug out & dusted off from my personal collection. I haven`t really seen this online, it may be out there somewhere but I sure haven`t come across it in my searches anyway. This joint was released way back in 1996 thru MCA Records & it`s by Ruffa. Now to be straight up & honest I could not find any info` out there on this kat so I can`t really provide y`all with a BiG write up on him unfortunately. All I can really tell ya is that if you are familiar with the Ragga/Reggae HiP HoP artist Mad Lion & you DiG his tunes then you`ll more than likely appreciate this joint because they`re pretty much from the same lane with the style of music that they do. Ruffa has a voice that sounds like he could be a distant relative of Cookie Monster.....LoL, but not in a bad way, it just gives him a very distinct sound on the mic...

To my knowledge Ruffa has only released one album & a handful of singles in the mid `90's (1995-96). The title of his only album is "A Diamond In The Ruff" which was released in 1996 by MCA Records, once I get a chance to find it in my collection I`ll be sharing it with y`all. Anyway, let`s get back to the single at hand shall we? On this single you get 4 joints in total; the Clean & Dirty Versions, the Instrumental & the Acappella (which is the Dirty Version in case you were curious) of "Representin`". The song was produced by Ruffa himself & also features the always DoPe Kool G. Rap. Both kats spit some straight hardcore lyrics over the beat which doesn`t disappoint either. I have to say that "Representin`" is probably the best song from Ruffa`s debut & only album. So y`all should definitely check this single out & give it a listen...

Going to share with y`all another promo single from 213, this one`s a CD Single that also came out in 2004 thru TVT Records. It`s titled "Groupie Luv" & it was produced by DJ Pooh who sampled Herbie Hancock`s "Chameleon" for the beat. Overall it`s a funky entertaining joint, I mean c`mon who doesn`t like groupies?.....LoL, this is clearly not a super lyrical track, but if you`re lookin` to get the crowd up dancin` I`m sure this joint`ll help you out with that. You get 5 tracks on this single; the Radio version, Dirty version, Instrumental, Accapella & the Call Out Hook. Never truly understood why some singles include that Call Out Hook ish, but for whatever reason it`s on here too. 213 did a music video for this song, it`s got a somewhat corny but comical vibe to it. That`s all that I really have to say about this joint, check out the tunes & enjoy...

213`s "ANoTHeR SuMMeR [PRoMo 12 iNCH]"...

My apologies to the visitors of this blog, I realize that it`s been almost 2 months since I`ve posted any music I just needed to take a lil` break. Hopefully I can start posting up somethings before I head up to Canada for a few days to visit my parents, brothers & friends. I`m kind of excited to take the trip it`s been almost a year since my last visit & this time around I`m going with my wife & son. Anyway I`m going to kick things back into motion with a TVT Records released Promo 12 Inch single that was originally released in 2004 by the West Coast super trio 213. Now if you are not familiar with who 213 is you should have your West Coast pass revoked.....LoL, I`m jokin` y`all. 213 is a trio of West Coast rappers consisting of Snoop Dogg, 'Mr. Regulate' Warren G & the late great Nate Dogg who all rep` Long Beach, California. The group`s name 213 stood for the area code of Long Beach at the time they formed (the area code has since been switched to 526). That`s all I`m really going to say about `em for now, I don`t want to get into great detail because I want to save that story for when I share with y`all their one & only album...

With that being said, the title of this single is "Another Summer" which is quite fitting seeing as how this Summer is pretty much winding down & honestly I can`t say that I`m sad about that....LoL, now being a Canadian I never thought I`d be so glad to be done with Summer, but ever since I moved down to Charlotte, North Carolina it`s another story altogether. So far I`ve been here for 2 Summers & they`ve been hella hot! The first one wasn`t quite as bad because it rained a whole lot, like 3 out of every 7 days that went by it rained. This Summer however it`s been CRaZy hot!!! Severe drought like weather, not as bad as what Cali`s been dealing with though thank God, but still very much hot with a lot less rain. I mean when you`re standing in the shade & it still feels as though you`re melting like ice cream it`s just simply too hot for comfort & definitely not enjoyable at all. Who knows though, maybe I just haven`t adapted to the climate yet...

Anyway, this promo single contains 3 tracks in total; the Clean/Radio version, the Instrumental & the Acapella. The song`s produced by none other than Kanye West who samples Eddie Kendricks` "Intimate Friends" for the beat. Latoiya Williams is also featured on the track & delivers some sweet soundin` vocals. It`s a decent song, not super spectacular but also far from wack. I can definitely see it getting some play at a few family BBQ`s since it has that nice laid back Summer time vibe to it. What`s also great about this single is that you get the Acapella which gives you another way to enjoy Nate Dogg`s vocals. Without the beat you truly get to hear just how talented of a singer he was, I`m sure it`s that way for just about any of his Acapellas though. So there ya have it, check out the music & enjoy...

Today I`m dustin` off a promo CD single that was originally released back in 1998 (it`s actually a European release) on Loud Records by Funkmaster Flex. The songs featured on this single are off of Funkmaster Flex`s "The Mix Tape Vol. III (60 Minutes Of Funk): The Final Chapter". There`s 5 tracks in total, the Radio/Clean Version, the LP/Dirty Version, the Instrumental & finally the Acappella for "Wu-Tang C.R.E.A.M. Team Line Up", a song that features Raekwon, the Harlem Hoodz, Inspectah Deck, Method Man & Killa Sin. It`s a pretty nice track that`s produced by DJ Scratch. The last song on this single is kind of a weird addition, well to me anyway since it`s more of an R&B song. I`m not sure who decided to add it to the single after the hardcore joint.....LoL, but for whatever reason it closes things out. "Here We Go" features Khadejia & Product, some folks that were affiliated with Wyclef at the time that`s probably why he makes a lil` appearance at the beginning of the song. The song itself isn`t bad, so go `head & give this single a lil` listen...

I hope y`all had a great Thanksgiving with your families! I sure did; ate good & spent quality time with some loved ones. Anyways I have another 12 inch to share with y`all, this one is by Philly emcee Cassidy. Now I`m gon` be all the way honest & state that I haven`t really listened to much of his music, but this song was getting plenty of play when it first dropped. So I am a lil` familiar with this tune, actually it reminds me of my cousin Dawson`s son because every time the song came on he`d start to sing the hook which is a Jay-Z sample from "Dirt Off Your Shoulders", what a memory! This 12 inch single was released by J Records back in 2005 & is produced by Swizz Beatz. You get 4 tracks in total on this promo single; the Clean or Radio Version, the Dirty or LP Version, the Instrumental (with adlibs unfortunately) & last but not least the Acappella which thankfully is not censored. I always hate when they choose to use the censored version of the track for the acappella to me it`s just stupid. So there y`all have it, go on & give it a listen...

AZ`s "HeY AZ [PRoMo 12 iNCH]"...

It`s been a while since I posted up a 12 inch single so I figured I`d hit y`all with something from AZ seeing as how I posted up that "L.O.D.B" Mixtape back in October. Gotta BiG uP the homie Dirt Dog for hookin` me up with this lil` promo 12 inch, much appreciated dogg!!!

Now let`s get to the music shall we? First off this is the "Hey AZ" Promo 12 Inch that was released back in 1997. It was actually set to be the lead single off AZ`s second album "Pieces Of A Man" which dropped in 1998, but for whatever reason once the album was released this track wasn`t even featured on it at all. I`m not sure why exactly, maybe the label was disappointed in the initial response that the single received. Only the label & AZ himself know for sure....oh & well maybe Tone & Poke a.k.a. the Trackmasters, after all they did produce the single...

 Some of y`all may recognize the beat that the Trackmasters used for this joint, that`s because they sampled the World`s Famous Supreme Team`s "Hey DJ". R&B fans may also recognize the tune as well seeing as how Mariah Carey`s joint "Honey" used it as well. While I`m talkin` about R&B, the female trio Sisters With Voices a.k.a. SWV are featured on "Hey AZ" -- they`re signing the hook wonderfully. You get 5 tracks on this 12 inch & obviously I`m DiGG`n the Dirty Version the most out of the 3 versions of this track...

The only difference that I could hear between the Clean Version & the Alternative Clean Version was that the Alternative was a lil` bit longer of a track, aside from that they sounded pretty much the same to me. The one thing that I have to complain about on this 12 Inch is that the Acapella is the edited version! I`ve always hated when they choose to give you the censored Acapella because to me that just isn`t the true version of the track, but this is only my opinion of course. Anyway go `head & peep the single out for ya`self...

I should have posted up that 2Pac "Dear Mama" single today instead of when I did, it would`ve made more sense....LoL, oh well what`s been done is done I guess. Anyway what I have for y`all is a promo CD single by the Fugees that was released back in 1996. This joint was actually featured on the Soundtrack for "When We Were Kings". A documentary about "The Rumble In The Jungle", the 1974 heavyweight championship bout between Muhammad Ali & George Foreman which took place in Zaire...

You see boxing promoter Don King was out to get a rep` in the boxing world, to do so he offered both fighters 5 G`s each for a match against each other. King found a backer for the whole thing in Zaire`s dictator Mobutu Sese Suko & that`s how the event became known as "The Rumble In The Jungle", which is also the title of the promo single by the Fugees that I`m sharing with y`all. The song features A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes & John Forte as well. It`s actually the only Hip Hop track on the entire "When We Were Kings Soundtrack", so I guess that`s why there`s 3 versions of "Rumble In The Jungle" & then the rest of this promo single is quotes from Muhammad Ali which is kind of cool in it`s own right. So there ya have it a lil history behind the title of the song go on & check it out, it`s definitely worth a listen...

BiGGiE`s "PaRTy & BuLLSHiT" [PRoMo CD SiNGLe]...

Today I have a lil` somethin` from the late great Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls for y`all to check out. I believe that this is his first single titled "Party & Bullshit" which was released back in 1993 thru Uptown Records, it was also featured on the soundtrack to the film "Who`s The Man?". It contains 5 tracks in total; 3 radio/ edited versions of the track & 2 dirty versions. The first track "Party & Bullshit [Radio]" is probably the better of the 3 radio edits, the reason being that Biggie switched up his lyrics, it`s done on all 3 edited versions but on this one the hook`s not annoyingly edited... 

I like the beat behind the "Party & Bullshit [Puffy`s Clean]" version, but the downside is that the hook`s annoyingly edited so it kind of takes away from the track, my opinion of course. The Lord Finesse Remix is definitely a DoPe track, however the clean/ edited version kind of sucks for the same reason that the Puffy`s Clean version blows....the hook`s annoyingly edited, I just don`t see why they didn`t do the same ish they did for the hook on the Radio Version, but that`s just me.....LoL, thankfully they included the dirty version of the Lord Finesse Remix as well as the Album Version so you can peep the rawness in the tracks the way they were intended to be heard, so go `head & check `em out for ya`self...

LaDy Of RaGe`s "AFRo PuFFs" [PRoMo CD SiNGLe]...

Today I have some good ol` tunes from The Lady Of Rage to share with y`all from 1994 when she was signed to the powerhouse label Death Row Records. "Afro Puffs" was the first song that I had heard from Rage back in the day on a college radio Hip Hop show. I had no clue on who she was, but I knew one thing....home~girl had lyrics & she could definitely rip the mic. A few weeks after hearing the song for the first time I caught the music video on Much Music`s Rap City, so I was finally able to put a face to her voice & she did rock some 'Afro Puffs'....LoL, she didn`t provide much in the eye candy department like say Foxy Brown or Lil` Kim, who were gettin` their props around the same time frame for being more sexual than being actual emcees. However she did bring ear candy to the table, with her rough & rugged rhymes over some very DoPe production by Dr. Dre (my opinion of course) while Snoop Dogg did his thing on the hook...

The track itself ended up being featured on the soundtrack for "Above The Rim", a film that also starred fellow Death Row Records artist 2Pac. It generated a nice healthy buzz for Rage, but for whatever reason Tha Row decided to sleep on her instead of capitalizing off that buzz. The label did eventually release her debut album titled "Necessary Roughness" in 1997, but by then only her die~hard fans were really checkin` for her so it didn`t sell all that many units. Another weird thing is that they didn`t even include "Afro Puffs" at all on her album, a move that I think was kind of retarded but hey the label was pretty much falling apart by then anyway...

The promo CD single that I`m sharing with y`all includes 5 tracks in total. You get the Radio Version, an 8 minute Extended Remix that features an intro by Dr. Dre & then it`s followed up by a lil` freestyle by Snoop Dogg before Rage finally comes in to rock for the rest of the track. The G-Funk Remix features a lil` intro type of thing where you hear Rage talkin` with someone who`s encouraging her to have some Hennessy, but she ain`t have none of that! She goes on saying that she`s got skills & doesn`t need to DiSS anyone, I wonder just who they were trying to get her to DiSS?....LoL, the LP Version & then the Instrumental close out the single. So there ya have it folks, this single is definitely worth checkin` out so go on & do so...

Today I`m gon` share with y`all the promo CD single for Capone-N-Noreaga`s "T.O.N.Y. (Top Of New York)". This is actually the very first track that I heard from the duo, it`s also my favorite joint from them. It dropped back in 1997 & was released by Penalty Recordings. Carlos Broady & Nashiem Myrick produced the beat while Tragedy Khadafi has a guest appearance. For those that don`t know this joint`s from Capone-N-Noreaga`s CLaSSiC debut album titled "The War Report". On this single you get 4 tracks in total; the Radio Version, the LP Version, the Instrumental & finally the Acappella (unfortunately it`s an edited version). What`s good? What`s happenin`?? What`s lovely y`all??? Got some what of an `Net exclusive......LoL, not too sure if this was ever posted before. What I have to share with y`all is a 4 track promo CD released by Loud Records that I got as a bonus for purchasing Wu-Tang Clan`s "The W" album at an HMV music store back in 2000. It`s nothing mind blowin`, but it`s still good for a listen without a doubt. On this promo disc we get a Kardinal Offishall remix of Wu-Tang Clan`s "Careful (Click, Click)", a joint from Killarmy titled "Militant", a track from Shyheim titled "Win" & the last joint on this promo CD is from the Black Knights titled "Killa Cal Lifestyle". My favorite joint off this has got to be the first one, "Careful (Click Click) [Kardinal Rmx]". Sure it sounds like it was taken off a mixtape by today`s standards.....LoL, but I DiG the Canadian~vibe Kardinal added to the mix, just wish the track wasn`t edited. Oh well, it`s still worth the listen so go `head & check it out & enjoy...

DaS EFX`s "DeaD SeRiouS" [VHS TaPe RiP]...

Got a lil` gift for y`all today & it comes courtesy of the homie MiSTa DiLLiGaF, I`m not too sure if he ripped this from the VHS tape or not but either way BiG uPs goes out to him for passing it along to me! This lil` gift that I`m talkin` about is a home video (no not shot by Das EFX, but home video meaning that you watched the video at home in your VCR....c`mon son it was 1992) that Das EFX released as promo back in 1992 for their debut album "Dead Serious", so it shouldn`t be so surprising that this video shared the same title as their album. Although the tape is kind of rare the video itself isn`t really all that mind blowin`, but for nostalgic purposes it`s cool...

The running time is just under 30 minutes, you get to see a few of their music videos, some short lil` interviews & a couple live performances. In total there`s probably about 6 or 7 minutes of Skoob & Krayzy Drayzy talkin` about where they`re from, how they started as a group, describin` their styles, etc. The lil` interview segments take place in between their music videos & live performances, while everything was shot on the set of the music video for "Straight From The Sewer". During the interview segments you can see that they both come across as some regular humble kats that love their craft to the max`. Something to take notice of is when the live performances start, it`s kind of cool to see Redman workin` behind the 1`s & 2`s as Das` DJ. So do ya`self a favor & check it out for ya`self, enjoy...

Dust`N off some ol` Canadian Hip Hop for y`all today from the "Pimp Of The Microphone" himself, Mr. HDV. This is a promo 12 inch that was released back in 1990, released thru ISBA Music Entertainment Inc.. DJ X produced "Secret [Advanced Rmx]" as well as "Secret [The Power Move Mix]" & it`s instrumental. You may recognize some of his work from Michie Mee`s debut album, he produced "You`re Feisty". Maximum 60 & Ron Nelson handled the production for "Secret [Original Mix]". All in all it`s a decent listen, go `head & check it out for ya`self...
